Ed Sheeran: U.N.I. Meaning
U.N.I. Lyrics
The only evidence that you'd been here before
And I don't get waves of missing you anymore
They're more like tsunami tides in my eyes
Never getting dry, so I get high
Smoke away the days, never sleep...

#1 top rated interpretation:In this song, Ed sings about his ex long-term girlfriend. UNI means university. Ed's ex wanted to go to 'UNI' but he wasn't planning to. So, they 'ended over UNI'. That explains the name of the song. Other parts of the song talk about how he misses her, and that he gets drunk to forget about her because he can't figure out a way to work out their relationship. Ed just wants to be close to her now but it's awkward after they broke up after a long and great relationship.

#2 top rated interpretation:My interpretation:
I found your hairband on my bedroom floor,
The only evidence that you've been here before
And I don't get waves of missing you anymore,
They're more like tsunami tides in my eyes
(A hairband is something a girl leaves around all the time; it could fall out their hair and then they just find another one, leaving that one lying there. He has nothing else from her except for the hairband and the strong loss of her)
Never getting dry, so I get high, smoke away the days never sleep with the light on
Weeks pass in the blink of an eye,
And I'm still drunk at the end of the night
I don't drink like everybody else,
I do it to forget things about myself,
Stumble and fall with the head spin I got
My mind's with you but my heart's just not
(He is so stuck in his "tsunami" that he has to drink and smoke it away. The "light" is pretty much his happiness; he has none. His heart is ready to move on but his mind is still on how things went down.)
So am I close to you anymore, if it's over
And there's no chance that we'll work it out
That's why you and I ended over U N I
And I said that's fine, but you're the only one that knows I lied
You and I ended over U N I
And I said that's fine, but you're the only one that knows I lied
("Uni" is British for "university". It just happens that it matches perfectly with the American "you n' I".
Everybody said we'd be together forever but I know that,
I never wanna settle down, come around, break up the love like Lego now,
Never wanna turn into another like you,
Sleep with my thoughts, dance with my views,
Everything's great but not everything's sure
(He doesn't want to have something to serious but he doesn't want to ruin it, tear it apart like legos.)
But you live in your halls and I live in a tour bus,
Now I'm in a position to be another stalker like every thing I say seems to always sound awkward,
Like our last kiss it was perfect, we were nervous,
On the surface,
And I'm always saying everyday that it was worth it,
Pain is only relevant if it still hurts,
I forget like an elephant, or we can use a sedative and go back to the day we fell in love just on our first kiss
(She is going to college and he is at his musical peak; he couldn't give it all away for her. Even though he says that he'll be an "elephant" and forget, he is just being sarcastic and meaning that he'll always remember but maybe drugs & alcohol could take it away.) -

#3 top rated interpretation:eds describing his heart break over his ex girlfriend of three years, they dated over 'uni' hence the title and lyric meanings. they finished when uni did because they both wanted differnt things; eds being fame and hers being a usual career. as the song describes the relationship finished over uni but he wished they hadnt. in late reports ed mentioned that, she is the girl he'd want to settle down with and marry, but hes currently focusing on his career.

His (current) girlfriend Cherry left London to got to UNI (UK
slang word for College/University) in America! They were together and broke up because she went to UNI and they couldn't do it long term over long distance. "(U N I= you & I) ended over (U.N.I= Uni/University)". He was heartbroken and turning to drink to "forget" but knows chasing his career is the reason they can't make it word long distance as much as her going to school is. He says he's fine but "she's the only one that knows he lied" because he is still vulnerable with her and she knows he's hurting.
It's okay though, they are back together now :). Sometimes life works out okay! -
He said in a tweet that U.N.I. stood for usually nothing innit.
-
Uni is university , he lied and said his ex could got to university. But he wasn't OK with it. So she broke up with him because he lied, and he misses her so he drinks to get her off of his mind.
-
Though the true meaning is they broke up because the girl went to a university, I like to belive she text dumped him and he's very upest. The text I imagine looked like this: u n I r done. (Not very grammatically correct, but it's how most people text these days.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway
-
Its about his deep and emotional sexual relationship with cats, and his disbelief that his cat wants to go to university, cause hes a cat
-
"It ended over UNI." 'UNI' stands for 'University' So it ended because his EX girlfriend wanted to go to UNI. He said it was fine, but obviously it wasn't.
He sung about her breaking up with him because she was going to UNI, but he wasn't. I think that's right...? -
The song was written when he found out that his then, long-term girlfriend was set to go to UNI but he wasn't planning on going. She would have to move away and the relationship would have to end.
