Ed Sheeran: Wake Me Up Meaning
Song Released: 2011
Wake Me Up Lyrics
And take my passport out again
and just replace it
See I could do without a tan, on my left hand
Where my fourth finger meets my knuckle
And I should run you a hot bath
and fill it up with...

#1 top rated interpretation:Its about his most expensive date. He had just moved to London, he was really poor and he was with someone at the time so he gathered up some money and bought two bus tickets to the seaside where he bought fish and chips for her.
Near to the end he sings ' I'll make you a heart pendant with a pebble held in my hand and I'll carve it like a necklace...' He finds a heart shaped pebble on the beach and makes it into a necklace which he gives to her.
Well, now you know.
PS. Ed said this himself, so its 100% the truth -

#2 top rated interpretation:He's talking about his girlfriend and about everything that he like about her.

This song is about waking up in the morning with the person you love. I don't think it's about an ex at all, I think its simply about someone that he loves, and all the things that he appreciates about her or wants to do with her.
It explores all the little details of someone, things you only notice when deeply in love
'You should never cut your hair because I love the way you flick it off your shoulder'
'You will never know just how beautiful you are to me'
It has a hint of problems they may be having, when he references not being home enough, however this song says that despite the challenges he loves the person and wants to overcome their issues. -
Could it be about a military man? I've thought that maybe it's saying that he loves her deeply, but "maybe I'm just in love when you wake me up" leads me to think that he has another love, which is his true love: the military. Like he's in love with her when he finally wakes up next to her, but the only way for him to survive during deployments is to detach from her and his feelings for her, only allowing himself to feel his love for her when he's home.
Just a theory. -
I don't think this is how it was written. But the feeling that comes across to me is everything about the relationship seems right in theory. They do everything a loving couple does. Like the heart pendant, DVD's, cup of tea in bed etc etc. But it's not true.
The subtle word that changes it for me is "just" (maybe I'm just in love when you wake me up). Implies he feels it when in a dreamy state, but not the rest of the day.
I know it's a slightly different look, and I know it's not what he wrote it for, it's remembering an ex that he loved and maybe still does. But then maybe that's the link? He felt he loved her enough to be completely devoted when they woke up together, but blames himself for not showing that same devotion all the time and "abandoned" her to go gigging.
It's a song of confused feelings that can't be understood.
In any case, it's a beautifully written song -
Is it just me, or would this make a good song for a brie and groom to dance to at a wedding? It is very specific to one preticular girl (the love of Shrevk, and her brother playing computer games)
It's a very free-verse song, so it almost seems like his train of thought about the girl he loves is flowing out. -
He likes a chick.
-
i think he loves this girl and knows so much about her and wants to start a relationship with her because they are so close but doesnt know if he can handle it. he only considers being in a relationship with her when he wakes up because in the morning everything seems easier during the day he is probably meets stress of work and everything else and doesnt know if he can handle a relationship even though he loves her so much

About his ex girlfriend and he is remembering everything that they did together.
