Flyleaf: Broken Wings Meaning
Broken Wings Lyrics
Oh I pray a friend for life
And have I ever told you how much you mean to me
Oh, you mean so much to me
I'm thinking all the time
How to tell you what I feel
I'm contemplating phrases
I'm gazing at...

1TOP RATED
#1 top rated interpretation:Most people say this is about a friend that someone lost/died, or just slowly over time drifted apart, but I think differently.
When I hear this song, all I can think about is a boy/girl's relationship, one of them dies, & the other never got a chance to say what they really thought of them. The lyrics bounce back & forth from the person alive on earth & the person in heaven & them basically talk to one another.
Boy/Girl that died sings the first verse:
Thank you for being
such a friend to me
Oh I pray a friend for life
And have I ever told you
how much you mean to me
Oh you're everything to me
I'm thinkin all the time
how to tell what I feel
I'm contimplating phrases
I'm gazing at eternity
I am floating in serenity
Basically thanking the other person who is still alive, they never got the chance to tell them what they really felt for them, but now, they are "gazing at eternity & floating in serenity" meaning they are in heaven& are happy & so should their lover on earth.
The person still alive on earth is the chorus & verse 2:
Please don't go just yet
Can you stay a moment please?
We can dance together
and we can dance forever
Under your stars tonight
We'll live and breathe this dream
The person on earth is begging the person that died to stay, just one last night, come back alive & be with me. "Live & breathe this dream" means they know it can & only will be a dream that the significant person will come back to them. They are mourning.
The person in heaven would follow up with verse 3:
Close your eyes
but don't dream too deep
and please pass me some memories
But I fall you're underneath
a thousand broken hearts
Carried by a thousand broken wings
A thousand broken wings
The person in heaven is telling their lover to not hurt, don't forget me, but move on. He/She is also telling them their are other couples that are going through losing the one you lost (a thousand broken hearts, a thousand broke wings) Also, in this lyric, it is also stating that the person's heart on earth is being "Carried" possibly healed by their significant other in heaven.
That's just my intrepretation. I LOVE this song. -
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

This song can have a lot of different meanings to a lot of different people. Some people could think of this song as her talking to god but others can think of it as her interpretation of how it feels to lose either a good friend or a loved one. But either way its a very touching song.

i think of this song as a broken relationship and one of them doesn't want to let go.it kinda reminds me of me and my ex.i always thought of him as my guardian angel and now hes trying to stop me from cutting but hes a fallen angel and so his wings are broken.thats what i get from it anyhow...

I really wonder how people see the death side of this song...but I guess people see things differently. How I interpret this song is as follows:
It's about a person - let's call that person a her - telling her best friend how much he means to her. She is saying that she hasn't told him how she feels but that he is everything for her. I say this from personal experience that whenever you are in love with a best friend, or with anyone for that matter, you're always thinking about to express yourself in the right words....about what you are going to say to them because you really want them to know that you care about them and love them. When she says 'I am gazing at eternity; I am floating in serenity' she is talking about seeing herself with him for the rest of her life (eternity) and how she is happy because of him; there is no fear in their relationship. She does not have the words to express to him how much she loves him.
She doesn't know how to tell him but she doesn't want him to go. She's pretty much just saying that he has always been there for her....1000 broken hearts (hers) carried by 1000 broken wings (his). -
This song is NOT about a boy girl relationship, its about you and God's.
I'm gazing at eternity- When you come to Christ, you have ETERNITY with him, and that is more then anyone of us could ask for, or even deserve.
1000 broken hearts
Carried by 1000 broken wings- God will mend your heart, he will put the peices back together
I think this song is a prayer Thanking God, for what he did, what he gave us, and how overwelming his love is, how no words can explain it. -
I think it's about how Gad has been so much of a friend to her, Cause mostly Flyleaf's songs are about God and well the beginning talks about how he's been so much of a friend towards Lacey and them.

guys u in every song when she reffers to some other person that other person is god. if u think about it:
thank you (god) for being such a friend to me
have i ever told you (god) how much you (god) means to me?
its very clear -
Really this song is SO easy but you all still get it wrong it's about her wanting to be with god it say under YOUR stars implying creation and ownership. It is saying how she felt that god was drifting from her but she doesn't want him to.

Whatever kind of relationship this song may mean...all types of relationships are important.
Flyleaf is sooooooooo awesome in singing about broken relationship and encourage people, since Lacey had been through so much pain.....it's a great band, I will remember to listen to their songs whenever I encounter problems. -
I think it could be about a dating relationship but to me it really hits a close/best friend thing. (However, either way its an amazing song and both views are great)
Its like a friend attempted or wants to commit suicide and the other is trying to explain to them how they feel.
The first verse is the person thanking their depressed friend and trying to explain their feelings. They want them to know how much the love them but they are having toruble finding the words.
"I am so lost for words. I am so overwhelmed." I see that as the friend being confused on how to help and feeling like its on them to save their friend.
"Please don't go just yet, can you stay a moment please?" that's like them begging their friend not to hurt themselves because they aren't ready to live without them.
"We can dance together, we can dance forever." meaning there are still good times to be had and they have so much more to look forward to in life.
"Under your stars tonight, we live and breathe this dream." the thoughts of that good friend dying consumes their lives as they try to find a way to stop it.
the final verse, in my opinion can go one of two ways (if viewing it as losing a good friend) 1. They are saying pass me some memories and lets remember the good times we've had. you've always been there to catch me and now I'm here for you and our broken wings will help carry our broken hearts to a better place. or 2. The friend ends up committing suicide and the person is asking for their friend to pass them some memories so they don't forget them and to watch over them from above until their broken hearts meet again in heaven.
Again, I agree with this and the one about it being a boyfriend/girlfriend passing. but to me, this gives it a deeper meaning for my life and the things I have dealt with. I think it just depends on what you have been put through.
