Flyleaf: Sorrow Meaning
Sorrow Lyrics
Into paralyzing silence
Like the moonless dark
Meant to make me strong
Familiar breath of my old lies
Changed the color in my eyes
Soon he will perforate the fabric of the peaceful by and by
Sorrow lasts...

#1 top rated interpretation:Flyleaf is a Christian band. Notice the capital "H" in "He knew each tear before it came". and the little "h" in the other "he" 's. Also, Satan is the Angel of Light. It is why he is called Lucifer. He was God's most beautiful Angel prior to his fall. God calls his word, the Bible, the sword of truth. It is also well known that Satan attempts to deceive. Therefore, "The sword is slicicing through the questions so I won't be fooled by his angel light" speaks to God's word clarifying what is right and what is wrong. I think it is about an adult, single women attempting to be abstinent, but failing. I think it is her version of how she feels when she fails. I think that "For just one second I felt whole... as you flew right through me" is about the very temporary satisfaction and closeness you feel during the act. But it is empty afterwards. But it is still very intimate and "I'll take this peice of you, and hold for all eternity" is about being in love, making love and knowing it is wrong at the time, but feeling so close to that person. "We kiss each other one more time and sing this lie that's half way mine" is about how she doesn't hold him responsible for the sin. She obviously wants him and is a willing participant, even though she feels remorse afterwards.
This is one of the most beautiful songs on the album. I love "All Around Me" as well. It is such a wonderful Praise song.

I always assumed it was about attempting (& failing) to remain abstinent, as @LostInTheWorld said.

If you read her book, The Reason, you'd know about her first love which I think this is about. And we kissed each other one last time... She couldn't see him for two months, but before that they kissed one last time. Then she got a call one day from him. And he told her he slept with another girl. First the ugly girl, that's smothering me... when she was told she literally stopped breathing for a few minutes. For just one second I felt whole... she was depressed, but with him she felt wanted-until then. I may be wrong about this, but I think this is what it is about.

lacey actually herself said it was about depression...when she said "sorrow lasts through this night" she said it meant she thought she was gonna have depression all her life, but at the end of the song it changes and she says the truth to herself, which is joy will come and depression wont be forever so she screams "joy will come" SO ITS MADE CLEAR joy will come.
-
I think it is about how you are still left with memories of before you were saved by God and how you still have to look at it, "left alone with only reflections of the memory, to face the ugly girl that's smothering me" Also i think it is about how none of that will matter once you get to heaven, "Joy will come"

I am pretty sure that this song is about the broken state of this age. This age is full of sin, brokenness and "sorrow" and this song is an acknowledgement of that and the hope for the time to come. In this age the devil is able to tempt, to fool us with his "angel light."
Our only refuge is in the Lord, who gives us a piece of himself (the Holy Spirit) to "hold for all eternity" (hold is the word used on the flyleaf website and not the word hope above) in order to persist through the devil's temptations and the sorrow that permeates through this age. "Soon he will perforate the fabric of this by-and-by" refers to Christ coming to end this age and the sorrow that exists here. He, Jesus, is the "Joy [that] will come."
Also this song is a huge reference to Psalm 30, verse 7 is as follows:
"Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning." -
This song is literally about sorrow, about how people feel deep in sorrow when they are sad. That they feel like this is infinite and will be forever, is a feeling that seems have no end. But as she says in the end of the song "Joy will come", she is like promising that this feeling is not forever.

I think this song is talking about Lacey's (the singer) experience in being saved. Flyleafs is a Christian band, and Lacey went through a lot to be the girl she is today. I'm fairly sure this song is talking about how she feels like she's tempted to go to a dark place (emotionally) and go back to the person she was before being saved, but God is helping her to be better.

@LostInTheWorld
The h is capitalized because it is the first letter in the line.. -
It's about the devil tempting her.
-
i think it's about a girl who is guilty of the sins she did in her earlier days.
all the 'he's, except for the 'his angel's light' part is refering to God, that he will bring peace to us, sins, sexual immorality may feel good and make us feel whole for the second...but still sorrow comes because we know that this will not work and that things are not suppose to go this way....the girl is looking back so now she has God and is stronger than the girl she was who only trusted in feelings that last for seconds...she will no longer be fooled by Satan's beautiful appearance and the temptations.
