Melanie Martinez: Play Date Meaning
Play Date Lyrics
You feel so far away.
You tell me to come over,
There's some games you wanna play.
I'm walking to your house,
Nobody's home
Just me and you
And you and me alone
We're just playing hide and seek,
It's...

#1 top rated interpretation:The song is about being used for sex. The boy she is involved with never seems to show her any love back. He doesn’t even care enough to talk to her outside of them hooking up. She tries to play it off, and pretend like it’s not a big deal to her. But towards the end of the song she admits the truth. She is actually in love with this boy.

#2 top rated interpretation:Honestly, I can only see one thing in this song - and that is "friends with benefits".
The girl is being clearly used by the boy. He calls her and she says that he feels so far away - meaning that he's not in his normal senses (basically, he's sexually excited). Although she knows that they shouldn't really have anything for each other, she starts to develop feelings for him. In this song, she already has feelings for him.
"It's getting hard to breathe under the sheets with you" means that her heart is racing and she feels suffocation because she no longer looks at this as a casual "no strings attached" sort of relationship.
But since the boy doesn't care about her feelings (because he still sees her as a friend with benefit) she also tells herself that "I don't give a fuck about you anyways." and so on to the point she's tired of chasing after him in hope to get the feelings back she has for him.
"You never share your toys or communicate" would mean that he literally doesn't give an F about her after he has his libido fulfilled.
"I guess I'm just a play date to you"
Now this is a sad line. It's at this point that she realizes that he see's her nothing more than a sex object that he can use to his heart's content and throw away when he's done.
"Ring around the rosy
I never know, I never know what you need
Ring around the rosy, I want to give you, want to give you
What you need"
Is when she's confused as to what she can do to make him fall for her, and admits that she's ready to do it. Obviously, continuing being treated like a sex object won't change anything. And she ends her song admitting that she really cares about him, and that she wants him to know. She says that if she gives more of herself, would he use her more? Because she doesn't want this "play date" to end.
And that makes it another sad part because she knows that he won't fall for her - so she just wants to spend more time with him.
P.S. If you have any similar relationship - please leave it. Sexual desires happen, yes; but don't let it destroy you. Please rate if you found this useful - thanks ♥ -

#3 top rated interpretation:I think all of the theories are correct but can I add something? Melanie portrays how bad the relationship is but then stays. I think the other theories are correct but much like how stories can have multiple themes, I think there is a smaller thing Melanie is trying to portray here. I say smaller because everyone else’s theories have more evidence. I think it’s also portraying someone who knows they are in a toxic relationship but loves the person too much to leave. It’s hard to leave a anyone you love, even if you know they are bad for you. She wants to leave but she also wants to stay, these are the emotions someone in a toxic relationship feels. OR she is trying to portray someone else. Seeing this happen to Crybaby makes you feel bad for her because you know this mistake won’t end well. If someone sees there friends staying in a toxic relationship, they feel the same way. Maybe she is also trying to show how a friend of someone in a toxic relationship feels. I’m sorry for writing a five paragraph essay

Okay so...I think this song is about how Cry Baby has a crush on a boy (Johnny). She spends a lot of time trying to get him to like her back, but no matter what she does, he always classifies their relationship as besties at the very most. She doesn't want to ruin their friendship, so she acts as disinterested as him. Towards the end, she admits to wanting to spend more time in him and get more serious.
Random side note, I think this song perfectly describes Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger's relationship -
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

Some pepole said this song is about sex and toxic relationship.Maybe that's what the song's meaning. But i still want to believe that the young girl who secretly falling in love with the boy who only interest in game and doesn't care about love.( sorry if my english is wrong and)
-
I think that crybaby is in a toxic realationship with a boys that is only using her for her body but she loves him too much her her too leave the realationship if I were her I wouldent be in the realationship in the first place.
-
I personally can relate with every single line in play date. It says about how hard a girl tries to keep the relationship going (even if she knows the guy likes her for her body) the girl goes to him to make him feel that she is always available for him. But the guy takes this availability for granted every single time, and after his need is done..... He acts as such the girl who was for him does not even exist . This is the true situation that most of the girls gets acquainted with...when the boys sees a girl as a play date, he does not care for future togetherness, he hides his relationship with that girl from his friends and family

i think its about a girl whose trynna hide her feelings because the guy has no interest in her so she covers up the pain by pretending that she also doesn't care ...thats why at first she says i dont give a fuck and at the end she admits that she really likes him
-
That over time she fell in love with this boy, but in the end she realizes that he only likes her because of her body. even though she tries to hate him she still struggles too because she still loves him :(
-
I think she is denial of the fact that she is in love with a boy who is just using her. And finally at the end she admits that she is in love with him.
-
I think she is talking about sex because of its getting hard to breathe here under the sheets with and she is being used but she still isint convinced hes cheating on her.
-
I think it's about Crybaby having a "Friend with Benefits" but she ends up catching feelings.
She doesn't wanna admit her love at first until she finally says "I guess I better tell you the truth. Yes I do care about you, yes I do want something with you"
Crybaby is very much in denial about her feelings, because it was supposed to be a "no strings attached" type of sexual relationship. Crybaby developed feelings though, and can't admit it. -
I think that Melanie is being used by a boy and she never notices until now. She portrays this by saying, "I don't give a fuck about you anyways". She also in the song talks about the boy never shares his toys or communicate. She has realized that she gives more than she takes. I don't even know if this makes sense but thats what I think.
-
I don't think she's actually in a relationship. She loves him but tries not to because he is Using her to "play games." She tells herself no but she can't hide it.
-
Crybaby is in love with a boy, but he only uses her to play games. He doesn't communicate with her, and the line "You never share your toys" probably means he doesn't share Crybaby's love for him ('toys' is a metaphor for 'love'). Crybaby repeatedly denies having feelings for him, but at the end admits she loves him despite his games.
