Melanie Martinez: Sippy Cup Meaning
Sippy Cup Lyrics
Blood still stains when the sheets are washed
Sex don't sleep when the lights are off
Kids are still depressed when you dress them up
And syrup is still syrup in a sippy cup
He's still dead when you're done with the bottle

#1 top rated interpretation:(Sorry I know I’m basically repeating everyone else)
Sippy cup is what “goes down in the kitchen”
Crybaby’s mom is heavily drunk and finds her husband with the sl*t from dollhouse.
(“Mom please wake up, Dad’s with a sl*t”)
Super drugged and hungover, she murders the dad and his mistress.
Crybaby finds the bodies, and her mom drugs her so that she never knew what happened.
The metaphor “blood still stains when the sheets are washed” is about how just because you try and fix something doesn’t mean the problem is gone. The sheets will forever have history of the blood even after you wash them.
The metaphor “syrup is still syrup in a sippy cup” means that you can’t cover up something by making it seem innocent; you can’t feed a baby straight syrup, but if you put it in a sippy cup then it’s fine -

#2 top rated interpretation:About child abuse/neglect with crybaby “blood still stains when the sheets are washed” trying get rid of something. “Sex don’t sleep when the lights are off” either crybaby’s dad cheating on her mom or sexual abuse. “Kids are still depressed when you dress them up.” Showing how crybaby has a bad life or her mom/family pretending everything is alright. “Syrup is still syrup in a soppy cup.” Nothing changing. And then in the video it seems crybaby’s mom murders crybaby’s father who is cheating on her with a “slut”(dollhouse) and then it seems with the video and the lyrics crybaby is drugged. Thank you for reading.

#3 top rated interpretation:I know this song is a continuation of Crybaby's story after Dollhouse, but there's more meaning to it than just that. The main chorus tells us that no matter how much you try to believe and say that just doing a little something will change it entirely, it's still the same whether you like it or not. In verse 1, it states: "Blood money, blood money. How did you afford this ring that I love, honey? "Just another shift at the drug company," He doesn't think I'm that fucking dumb does he?" This tells us that the mom (as interpreted in the album and story), used the inheritance money to buy herself a nice (and probably pricey or expensive) ring she saw. The inheritance money came from her husband after she murdered him. We can tell that he was cheating on her too just with the next two lines. We can infer that he was sexist and thought she would be too dumb to figure out anything about the affair because she's a woman. The next few lines in this verse tells us about how the mother had returned home early, to which she finds her husband cheating and having an affair. He explains to her all the things she doesn't have compared to his new lover, one of which being her ass. The mother proceeds to tell him that her ass is only the way it is because of plastic surgery, hence "You call that ass your own, we call that silicone." The next verse is "Pill diet, pill diet, if they give you a new pill then you will buy it. If they say to kill yourself, then you will try it. All the makeup in the world, won't make you less insecure. You got weights in your pockets, when you go to the doctors. Your favorite candy's cotton, that's why all your teeth are rotten." The first three lines in the second verse tell us about peer pressure and what it can do and how badly it can affect people. The next lines tells us about how girls will put on makeup to make them feel less insecure, but it doesn't. The last few lines refer to the Cotton Ball Diet, which would cause some people to have rotten teeth.

In my opinion, Sippy Cup is about not being able to accept reality. It could also be about addiction or something may seem innocent when it's not. That is my take on it. What is yours?
-
It’s about just abuse in the family in general, mainly alcohol and drug abuse. In the end, it is still happening.

Melanie Martinez's song "Sippy Cup" is a dark and twisted take on the innocence of childhood. The lyrics tell the story of a child who is manipulated and controlled by their parents, who are obsessed with maintaining a perfect image in public. The "sippy cup" becomes a symbol of the child's imprisonment, as they are forced to drink from it even though they are too old for it. Martinez's haunting vocals and eerie sound effects add to the unsettling atmosphere of the song, making it a chilling commentary on the dark side of familial relationships.

"You've got weights in your pockets when you go to the doctors" is referring to people with eating disorders putting heavy objects in their pockets so when the doctor weighs them, the weight loss will not be apparent.
"Your favourite candy's cotton" is referencing another eating disorder-related matter, where people will eat cotton balls to make them feel "full" as opposed to eating real food.
"That's why all your teeth are rotten" is talking about how people with eating disorders, specifically ones that involve purging, will cause great damage to your teeth due to all the stomach acid in your mouth.
Hope that helps, I find that a lot of people are confused about those lines in particular :) -
In Sippy Cup, Cry Baby is a witness to her drunk mother murdering her father and another woman he cheats with in their home.
In the chorus, she emphasizes on the fact that you cannot solve a problem by merely dressing it up and making it look good on the outside. She makes a reference to Syrup, which in this case means alcohol.
She states that alcohol is still alcohol even if it is poured in a cute sippy cup; or in general terms, problems still persist no matter how much one tries to cover them.
“blood money, blood money” pretty sure the meaning is the money paid (by a killer - in this instance crybaby’s mom) to the family of a person who has been killed.
As narrated in the story, Cry Baby’s mother in her drunken state chose to hide the dead bodies of her husband and his lover in a cradle.
However, mel metaphorically uses this “corpse in a cradle” to depict the fact that her childhood, the peace and family love that existed is now dead, despite her mother’s attempt to conceal it even in plain sight. -
This song is about how no matter how much you try to cover up the problem, it's still there. It's also about alcohol addictions.

Crybaby's mom figures out that her husband is cheating on her. When she is very drunk, she finds her husband and his mistress and murders them both. When Crybaby finds out, her mother drugs her so she will pass out (and probably not remember what she saw).
"Syrup" is a metaphor for alcohol.
The lyrics "Kids are still depressed when you dress them up. And syrup is still syrup in a sippy cup" means that no matter you try to change things, and act like (depression/alcoholism) is normal, it wont work.
"Pill diet, pill diet. If they give you a new pill than you will by it. If they say to kill yourself than you will try it" shows how people will do what anyone says because they want to fit in,they're desperate, or they are an addict.
"You got weights in your pockets when you go to the doctors". This refers to how people who have anorexia/ bulimia/ orthorexia ( or any other ED that causes weight loss) will put heavy items in their pockets so the doctor will not notice their weight loss.
"You favorite candy's cotton"; referring to the horrible cotton ball diet that some models use to stay skinny ( because cotton doesn't have calories but it will keep them full).
"That's why all your teeth are rotten" also referring to how people with bulimia's teeth are not in great shape because every time they purge it the stomach acid starts eating away at their teeth.
"Blood still stains when the sheets are washed" means that no matter how hard you try and erase the bad things you have done, it will always be there.
Hope this helps guys! Go listen to this song, it's definitely one off my favorites! -
In the music video of sippy cup, after the mother kills her husband and his mistress, She wraps them up in sheets.
-
Honestly I think this song is representing trying to push someone or something away. Some thing you think is causing you pain or anxiety.
-
i think maybe it might be about crybaby's brother or relative dead in some sort of way (idk yet) but i think this because it says "Of course it's a corpse that you keep in the cradle" so maybe its because that sibling died. this is my best guess but i really dont know

Like others, I believe this has something to do with the family in the "Dollhouse" music video.
"Blood still stains when the sheets are washed"- I think it's referring to no matter how much you try to get rid of something, it's still going to be there- or the mother killed the father.
"Sex don't sleep when the lights are off"- I think it's referring to the father, and how he's cheating on the wife.
"Kids are still depressed when you dress them up"- This is referring to Crybaby, and I'm guessing she's depressed from having such a shitty life, and how she's dressing up (Or her mother is) to make it seem like she's perfectly happy.
"Syrup is still syrup in a sippy cup"- this is either referring to how nothing changes no matter how much you pretend it had, or the mother drugging the child.
"He's still dead when you're done with the bottle"- the mother killed the father learning about his affair, and is drinking so she can pretend everything is fine and lovely.
"Of course it's a corpse that you're keeping in the cradle"- either the mother killed her baby (she may have had another child as crybaby and her brother don't seem like babies) or she didn't take care of it and it died, so she's pretending it's still alive.

This is just a guess but the line "syrup is still syrup in a sippy cup" could refer to the mum trying to hide her alcahol addiction. If you read Melanie martinez's book the page for sippy cup says "she took a drink from a sippy cup that's pink because of that you'd never think that she'd pass out under the sink"
also the line "kids are still depressed when you dress them up" could refer to the fact that some people think that if you have designer clothes and look good your life will be perfect but it won't this idea is also mentioned in another song called orange juice in the line"everyone wants what the other one's working."
Also the line"your favourite candy's cotton that's why your teeth are Rotten" could refer to an eating disorder called cotton ball diet or bullimia this is also referred to in orange juice in the line "for another round of bulimia"
This is all a complete guess and not a very good one tbh -
Crybaby's mom kills Crybaby's dad because he cheated on her and Crybaby is in fear of what will happen to her. (This is just my theory)
-
Crybaby's dad was cheating on her mom so her mom kills her dad and his mistress. Crybaby sees it happen and her mom try's to kill her by drugging her sippy cup. "Drugs diet drugs diet" her mom only allows her to eat drugs.
-
You all might be thinking too deep into this. It means how small actions can't fix what has happened. "Blood still stains when the sheets are washed." You can't cover what has happened. It doesn't fix anything. "He's still dead when you're done with the bottle."
