Melanie Martinez: Soap Meaning
Soap Lyrics
Think I just remembered something
I think I left the faucet running
Now my words are filling up the tub
Darling, you're just soaking in it
But I know you'll get out the minute
You notice all your fingers pruning up

My first thoughts were about talking about depression. Personally, when she says she said to much I think of when I mention how bad I feel inside to another person and "wash my mouth out with soap" by trying harder to seem happy and put together. It's like she's on the edge of spilling everything inside and is forcing herself to hide it.

To me, Soap is about suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), something I suffer from myself. Although people like me are often labeled “perfectionists” it cuts deeper than that. OCD is about being fearful of something and creating irrational responses to avoid unpleasant results. As much as I may want to let go and get “under your skin” I’m fearful of the outcome that it could bring. So instead, I try my best to safety-wrap my experiences or “keep the water warm”. I’ll also often second guess my actions, for fear of leaving “the facet running” or questioning something I said in the past. These thoughts are often irrational. For instance, I may be sure that I locked the doors when I left the house but I still feel anxious that someone may break in. The feeling brews in me, it leads to negative thoughts and repeating depression. In this song, the lyric “now I better wash my mouth with soup” describes the irrational response to the anxiety and depression caused. In order to make sure I don’t feel this way again, I “wash my mouth out with soup”. Essentially, OCD is like a never-ending cycle starting with a fear and then irrational behaviour. Whenever negative outcomes are achieved, more fears are added and thus more irrational behaviour is added. The problem grows and grows, and the depression will get worse and worse. This is all hard to explain because it’s so overwhelmingly difficult to understand even to the person who has it but I hope it helps. Seriously, this song is about much more than just a relationship and it pains me looking at the comments that it’s rated so low because so many people are unfamiliar with what OCD really is and when to identify it.

On the contrary, I think that Soap is about people accidentally saying the wrong words in society, and so she has to ‘wash her mouth out with soap’, ‘threw the toaster in the bathtub’ mentions that she wants the electricity from the toaster to kill all her words. I know many you think that Soap is about someone in love with someone else and being afraid to tell them, but this was my first impression when I heard the song
-
I agree with the song being about a really bad relationship and i think wash my mouth out soap means she probably said horrible things about the abusive relationship she wishes could be taken back but never will.
-
I think it's because Melanie has gotten contacted by angry people because she curses in some of her songs so she's apologizing and saying that's just who she is. That explains why she keeps saying that she shouldn't have said something.

Mel is saying she said something she shouldn’t have to someone ( a boy she likes or someone close ) and she should hate herself for doing that.

So Melanie falls in love with a boy and she don't know how to say that she love him and everything gone wrong e.g.God i wish i never spoke,oh, i say too much it over float,i through a toster in the bath tab. Sorry for spellings
-
Crybaby is confused about how to tell her lover how she feels about him. What she says came out the wrong way (i wish i never spoke).poor crybaby.
-
i think its about crybaby being in a relationship and wants to take it to the next level. she wants to tell him that she loves him but it scared. when she dea tell him it say in the song "threw a toaster in the bathtub" meaning now that she has told him how she felt he might reject her.
-
I think that it's about her arguing with someone and saying too much. In the lyrics, " I'm tired of being careful, gentle, trying to keep the water warm. Let me under your skin" is Crybaby saying she doesn't care about provoking the person she's talking to, to let her make them mad. Then they hurt her, so she pulls the 'Love' card, which is explained in the lyrics.
-
I really think it means that she's in a abusive relationship now and she tries to fix what she said so she doesn't get hurt and then she started choking in one of the scene which means he could've choked her before. So she threw the toaster in to kill him because he hurt her. Think about it she made him feel all comfy in the tub, meaning he made her feel comfortable in the beginning then he gets messy.
-
Crybaby is saying to much which means she was stumbling with her words. "Threw a toaster in the bathtub" means she just want's to get over the fact she want's to be accepted but she doesn't. She doesn't know what to feel like.
