I believe this song is about a couple who recently broke up because they decided that it was better for them to split at that specific moment in time. It also seems like the guy (singing) might not have had exactly what the girl might have wanted ("I tried to paint you a picture / The colors were all wrong"). They might get back together because they're not saying goodbye (goodbye would imply forever).
