Penelope Scott: Gross Meaning
Gross Lyrics
Made me feel clean by comparison
And it was the gun in my mouth
And the fire in my house
It made me look so innocent
I'm never gonna feel good again
I've played this game all the way to the...

So my interpretation is that this is a woman settling for a bad guy, and maybe she just isn't a healthy person mentally or emotionally but by comparison to him she's a saint. And she knows he's bad for her. But she doesn't want to leave him because she thinks no one else will take her because she's so horrible that she can only "love" bad people because if she dated someone good that she'd ruin it and corrupt them so she's just stuck in a shitty cycle of trying to find love but settling on shitty guys that only make her worse. That's why she sings " it was so easy with you, so salty and gross, made me feel clean by comparison" because to whoever the song is meant be, just thinks that dating this person feels easier than actually trying, it gives her the excuse as to why she has such bad luck finding love or partners. She doesn't want to be the reason it didn't well.
