Penelope Scott: Self Care Meaning
Self Care Lyrics
Cut your nails, do your makeup, and wake up late
Fill a bottle up with water and a soggy piece of fruit
Fill the workbook up with things that you can do

1TOP RATED
#1 top rated interpretation:I found this song heavily representing mental health, how mania and depression cross over. I see mania represented when this song describes the need to do everything, before describing it'll never be enough. This is counteracted with the video game style of the sound affects, and also shows how others pressure leads to more self doubt and self worth issues before being hidden once again with "Self Care" strategies.
-
I always felt like everyone is telling her the "top ten ways to smear honey on her face" and that maybe if she tried more she could finally be worth something and basically telling her she is worthless because she can't even do the basic self care strategies and she's talking about not wanting to be like that because it's temporary and never fixes anything as shown in the line "fuck not enough, cry a river, smash a cup" and "maybe if you fixed the whole world then you'd earn it"
-
I personally think this song is about mental health and trying to find ways to feel better (drugs, sex, alcohol etc.) But none of them work no matter what.
-
I think she had mental health problems and she tried to have more self care but her mind tells her otherwise
-
I think it is talking about how she hears about people doing all things for self care, but she doesnt like those things or doesnt have the energy for them.
-
This song is written from the perspective of someone who is trying do their best but it never seems to work,eg.“it’s never ever gonna be enough for the people in the back row” which can feel very degrading.
Hope this helps!
-
I personally think it means when you try for some others, it's never good enough for "the back row". And I personally know this feeling. So I can kinda relate.
-
i feel like it’s talking about the beauty standards and how insane they are now and how easy it is to get advice and it pressures you.
