Penelope Scott: Lavender Meaning
Lavender Lyrics
At writing songs for things that make me glad
I try to tell you that I love you
And it comes out sounding like I'm sad
Or maybe I'm mad
Yelling at the world
Am I really gonna be a stupid girl
I'm...
-
This song to me personally meant someone you felt you had a connection with and you tried expressing your feelings to them but it comes out messy and confusing.
“What am I gonna do
When you leave me too
What am I gonna say
When you walk away”
I think these lyrics meant your worried that person is eventually gonna leave you if you don’t express or feelings soon.

This song is about a young woman struggling with her feelings for someone. She wants to express her emotions towards them through a song, as writing is where she finds her strength. However, these feelings are too unfamiliar, leaving the words she writes seeming as though she is accusing the one she loves, rather than confessing. She grows frustrated with her inability to write the way she wants, talking herself down and self deprecating herself. She wonders if she will always be a “stupid girl” and insists that she is “Trying my best; giving my all”, which could refer to both her writing and her current status with the person she loves.

The song seems to me to be about communication problems and not being able to express your emotions. The tetris melody is a terrible way to get an emotional message across and does not fit the theme of what shes trying to say. When wanting to make a confession ("I'm in love"), she is scared of the consequences (being left), so she is confused and insecure and what she says is a rambling mess ("or maybe I'm not, yelling at the world, am I really gonna be a stupid girl?"). When trying to describe her love she falls into cliches ("love you like a drug"). She also literally says "I've never been so very stellar at writing songs of things that make me glad, I try to tell you that I love you and it comes out sounding like I'm sad". Great song

i noticed the tetris theme in the instrumental, and in this song penelope sounds confused and frustrated, and tetris is a game about connecting pieces, and there’s a line that says “It takes a very special kind of glitch
To make a monster out of something so kind”
so i think the song’s about connecting pieces and realized how bad somebody (a lover) is -
This song sounds like communication/social issues in a nutshell, believing that everyone is gonna leave them if they express what they’re thinking in a true tone of voice.

I see Lavender as a song about a toxic codependent relationship where the speaker would kind of be considered the victim. The speaker keeps repeating “I’m in love” and is afraid for when their partner will “walk away” and leave them too. The line “just giving my all, and turns out that’s not very much at all.” seems to be the speaker trying their hardest to be what their partner wants, but keeps falling flat of what they were expecting.
