The Gift Lyrics
Like I never wanted anything
I suppose I'll let this go and find a reason I'll hold on to
I'm so ashamed of defeat
And I'm out of reason to believe in me
I'm out of trying to get by
I'm so afraid of the...

I think as far as the video itself goes, it seems as tho he was drunk and was driving the girl somewhere and ran off the road and she died. hence the reason shes seen as a ghost in the car at the end. and why there was a shrine on the side of the road. maybe the gift is that he has the gift of life, that he lived and she didnt. maybe he wishes he could have died instead.
As far as his real life experiences go, I dont know much about his life to make a good interpretation, but I can relate to it. I, like others, have made mistakes im ashamed of, and are hard to live with. -
I think its about being an alcoholic after a while the people you love don't want to be around you because of it and he is ashamed of it. I think he's afraid of the help they offer. He's scared of being sober and while he was drunk he didn't care for the ones that loved him. As a drinker i can relate as you burn bridges the ones you love go away. Now he's alone he is ashamed of the life he's living.

I believe this song can be interpreted as a messege about Christianity. Please do not flame me, I am just giving this as an idea, I'm not trying to force my views. I agree with most of these interpretations.
Most christians believe that they are given the gift of God in their life, and their goal is to become a "fisher of man", or to convert more people to Christianity. I'm a Christian, and though I am ashamed of this, sometimes I'm afraid to tell people my beliefs, for fear of being shunned. The first line is basically a beacon for all of the dark times in anyone's life. For the line "I can't face myself, when I wake up, and look inside the mirror... I'm so ashamed of that thing.", that is exactly how I feel when I go off on someone, and insult them, because that's not how God wants me to act. I also feel angry at myself when someone dismisses me as a "zealot" when I express my views, and they disagree.
"Hold me now I need to feel complete, like I matter to the one I need..."
This is one of the most relevant lines in the song. I think that this shows the low times of being a Christian, when you think God has abandoned you, and you feel him no longer with you. You have to ask for him to help you through hard times, because you can't carry the weight yourself.
:) God Bless. -
The song to me is about the self loathing after hurting someone you care about and feeling undeserving of the love they give in return. I get annoyed when everyone interprets EVERY Seether song in a way that relates it to Shaun's past relationship with Amy Lee. To those of you who DON'T do this good for you to those of youy who DO, understand that there is a lot more to Shaun's life than his previous relationship Amy and stop fucking assuming ok?

I think 'the gift' is being forgiven, and he's afraid of it...
-
The song is about not being able to accept being loved by someone and that rejection turns you into something that your not.

Ultimately this song is about shame. He's expressing more than just a feeling of shame, rather a perception of the self. Interpret it how you want, but the core of the message is a deep sensation of being incapable of deserving something beautiful. It could be someone's love, someone's sacrifice, or the respect and appreciation of others. If you've ever felt unworthy, this song is speaking to you.
-
Song has nothing to do with abuse ok. He and Amy Lee were married and had a daughter. They did fight and got a divorce. The kid might be or might not be his daughter, most likely not because she is Latino.

Now my interpretation of this song may be completely different from everybody else's, but this is what I think... "The Gift" itself is the gift of love. In this song, he's saying that he's afraid/ashamed to receive this gift because he feels unworthy. He doesn't like who he is as a person and he's ashamed of himself. In a way, he doesn't want "the gift" because he doesn't feel thqt he deserves it, but at the same time he really wants this gift because love is a beautiful thing. When Shaun says "Hold me now I need to feel complete like I matter to the one I need," that line can be saying that he wants love and he wants to have this gift even though he doesn't deserve it.

I think music is a gift from an artist that lets you interpret it or apply meaning however you see fit. For me, my Mom passed away 11 years ago this September. She gave me the gift of life, which is pretty precious in itself. However, I guess my personality leans a bit to the dark, so I don't feel like I belong, and at times don't feel I am well (depression). I'm afraid of living life to it's fullest and extending myself to other human beings. I've never been a deviant, but I am just on the right side of being wrong. So for me, this song is thanks to my Mom for the life and lessons she gave to me, and an apology and admission of guilt for not owning the life she gave me and doing the best I really can with it. Thank you for your time.

I think the song is about a guy who has contracted aids from a woman, i feel this way because the gift that he has recived is a shamfull and scarry to him at the same time. just my thoughts thanks for your time.

Isn't the song just about how bad he feels in regards to how he treated his wife. I think it is also about his daughter Jayde "I'm so afraid of the gift you give me", I think it's about how he feels he can't be a good enough father to his daughter because he isn't right in himself and he's scared he'll screw up and they won't have any sort of relationship.
Also if you really want to go into the relationship of the video (which shaun stated is not related to the song in any way). I would suggest that perhaps the video is of him feeling like he mistreated his wife, and feels that he may be doing the same to his daughter an that he is afraid of losing her, or maybe already feels as though he has. -
This song is about the gift of life and how he has twisted his into something he is totally ashamed of and can't stand he is afraid to keep going with his gift of life because its a miserable one

(I know I already typed this same interpretation before, but that last one had spelling mistakes and grammer mistakes, and I can't find a way to remove it. So here is a re-type of my interpretation.)
Most people call life, "the gift of God"
The lyrics state:
"I'm so afraid of the gift you give me."
I think this means that he is afraid to face life and it's potential consequences if he makes a mistake.
He is ashamed of the life full of lies that he's living becuase of his past mistakes, and because of what he has done that he is ashamed of doing, he has been defeated inside by himself. Because of this, like I said before, he doesn't want to face things because he's afriad how it will turn out, and he doesn't want to reach out to the world because he is paranoid of something else that's new, just going wrong just like everything else that has happened becuase of him in the past. -
