Lived with this song in my head for many years, covered and sang it on the guitar so I know it pretty well. The first set of lyrics introduces the song as do many songs by giving a poetic visual and a paradoxical comparative:
"Boredoms in the bathroom shaking out the loose teeth"
Boredom in the bathroomn could be referring to the time or time spent waiting, in a bathroom or 'the waiting room. Of an abortion clinic as "Sally" in the stirrups" claims her own destiny and the "shaking out of loose teeth" could be a profound metaphor depicting lack of emotional stable ground, represented in "Loose"- teeth; as teeth are a rooted and are understood to be stable
And a reliable physical entity that the "shaking out" of them could seem to all Sence of reality as in the disbelief one might in have to deal with in having to face such a heavy experience as abortion. I think however, in this first framing the one with the Loose teeth could be Sally's partner and sally being the one "claiming her own destiny" this part very graphicly depicts a certain situation one might face in a misspent youth faking up a rampage for- what real slaves which are ourselves
One of the things that really gets to me in this sing is its use of imagery and also compassion for the youth, both giving guidance through having experienced it. Which is implied in the lines: "nobody nowhere understands anything about me and all my dreams... Lost at sea
"lost at sea..." Brining in the song's empathy and giving it a universal feeling as we all sometimes in our youth might feel as in we indeed are lost at sea. On personal level I think this song depicts personal and subjective experiences with a feeling of teenage boredom and liatlessnes we have all at one time come to experience.
