Smashing Pumpkins: Lily (My One and Only) Meaning
Lily (My One and Only) Lyrics
i can hardly wait till i see her
silly, i know i'm silly
cause i'm hanging in this tree
in the hopes that she will catch a glimpse of me
and thru her window shade
i watch her shadow move
i wonder if she.......?

I would like to believe that it’s about his infatuation with Lillian Gish, the First Lady of Silent film in America, also whom their album “Gish” was named. Many of the work and art used in their albums and concerts reflect that era in American culture.

He was in love with an underage girl name lily. I know because I went to high school with her and was a close friend when this all went down. The Mellon collie album was released the same year.

Billy wrote that song for his cat, Lily <3
-
Sounds like a romance between a male and a female cat.

A playful number . I think Billy writes about the women in his life and just inserts names sometimes even though its based off his real expereince.. such as JUNE .. LILY , RUBY .. or this is one of those Gershwin esque tunes he wrote like his ' my Blue Heaven ' cover in which he is enthralled with the mellon collie imagery and idea of romance .. a boyish naiveness of watching a girl they like pass by .. does she wave for real ? or is it what the song writer / Story teller want to see ?
thats my take
John Meat -
Either a peeping tom or a stalker.

I think this song is about how modern man has lost touch with nature and the desire to return to a more natural way of life, "my one and only" being a reference to being one with nature. He can still see glimpses of her through her window shade but is dragged away by society which is forcing him to conform to modernism.
