Sum 41: Best of Me Meaning
Best of Me Lyrics
I'll make everything alright
All these things that I've done
Now what have I become
And where'd I go wrong
I don't mean to hurt
Just to put you first
I won't tell you lies
I will stand accused
With...

He is singing about a girl he lost, and its because of what he did that pushed them apart. And so he is saying sorry and wishing that this girl could only see the best of him because he cares about her so much. Its a love song, of wishing he could have fixed his mistakes and been with her. And hes not singing about getting back together he cares deeper than that. He only wants her to know he is sorry for everything he has done.

It's so hard to say that I'm sorry
I'll make everything alright
All these things that I've done
Now what have I become
And where'd I go wrong
I think this bit means that its hard for him to step up and be the bigger person and accept what he's done. He is also saying that its hard to say he will make everything alright because in some respects he cant because whats done is done. It is also possible that the things that the person is asking of him is too much. He doesn't understand how he let things go wrong and how he hurt without the intentions of but still managed to do so and possibly still doesn't understand what he did.
I don't mean to hurt
Just to put you first
I won't tell you lies
I will stand accused
With my hand on my heart
I'm just trying to say
I think the first section is about him coming clean and being honest to the person he is singing to and apoligising to clear his own conscience. Even if it crushes the person he is singing to.
I'm sorry
It's all that I can say
You mean so much
And I'd fix all that I've done
If I could start again
I'd throw it all away
To the shadows of regrets
And you would have the best of me
The chorus which repeats the message that the artist is genuinely sorry its pretty self-explainatory. Two interpretations are here one in which the artist wants to rebuild a lost relationship but this time have the person only see the best of him. The other interpretation the artist just trying to free himself by apoligising and allowing the other person to have peace and move on.
I know that I can't take
Back all of the mistakes
But I will try
Although it's not easy
I know you'd believe me
Cause I would not lie
Don't believe their lies
Told through jealous eyes
They don't understand
I won't break your heart
I won't bring you down
But I will have to say
The first section supports the view that the artist wants to rebuild the relationship because he wants to try and take back mistakes. Which shows that its not a case of leaving the past and moving on but that he wants to go back and rebuild bridges and treat the person right because they mean a lot. The second section has reference to "jealous eyes" which maybe that external sources had unwelcome input on the relationship but now he knows that the person will believe him over others. "I wont break your heart" just places further emphasises that the artist is after change from old habits and doesn't want to cause pain for the person that "means so much" to him. -
In my opinion the song is about someone not really realising what they had until they lost it. The artist is apoligising for a lot of mistreatement he has inflicted on someone close to him and wants that person who has been there for him to come back and only see "the best of him." I think the lines "dont believe their lies, told through jealous eyes" indicates that outsiders tried to get involved between a relationship and caused trouble that got back to the person the artist is writing the song to. He's telling the person not to listen and to start again.

I think that the song is trying to apoligise for a lot of mistakes that were made in the past. It doesn't really clarify if the artist is trying to fix these mistakes for the sake of his own conscience or because he wants the person he has mistreated back in his life. To me it seems the song is written for someone the artist has had a history with and still means a lot to the artist. From my personal viewpoint its a song more about making peace and moving on than trying to restart something that happened in the past. I believe this because it says "I wont break your heart, I wont bring you down" which to me shows that the artist is done causing pain on that person he has dedicated the song too and wants to leave the past behind.
