#1 top rated interpretation:Rivers noticed his farther started drinking when he left him and his mother.
When he was young he noticed a beer in the fridge and immediately believed his step father was going to leave, and became terrified. That's what this song is about.
This also caused him to be terrified of alcohol, and he did not drink until he turned 21. -

#2 top rated interpretation:This song is about how he is scared that his step-dad will leave his mom when he sees a beer in the fridge because that is what his real dad did. It is a very clear interpretation. When he says icebox that is the fridge and a heinie is a heinkin beer and so on. By the way I love playing this song on Rockband!! I love you Weezer!!!

I believe it’s much darker. Come on - it’s about sexual abuse by his father and stepfather. Why do you think the Heineken bottle is behind him, bubbling and gonna blow- jeez people
-
I have listened to this song since is came out in 1994 I believe. Being sober for 12 days... Today 9/23/17 is first time I interpreted the lyrics. I believe it's totally about Alcoholism.
-
This song hits home. Alcoholism runs on both side of the family. Ny dad was a huge alcoholic. I almost went there, but i was smart enough to turn away cause I didn't want to be like him. The lyrics "this bottle of Stevens awakens ancient feelings" almost brings me to tears cause I know how it feels to see alcohol and be reminded of how much it hurt you and your family in the past. Amazing song.
