Zac Brown Band: Colder Weather Meaning
Colder Weather Lyrics
Closes the door before the winter lets the cold in,
And wonders if her love is strong enough to make him stay,
She's answered by the tail lights
Shining through the window pane
[Chorus:]
He...
-
After much thought, both my sister and I think the following: He had a deep love with a woman that he lost due to a death, possibly related to cold weather (avalanche, snowstorm)...the song is all about his journey as he attempts to move on. No matter how great the next woman is...she doesn't compare to his first love. The perception from the women is that he simply can't commit due to his selfish ways perhaps; although, the tables turn if you interpret it this way. He wants so badly to love them, and can't. Either because he's still grieving or is afraid to lose someone close to him again. Colder weather represents grief....at the end, it is possible he commits suicide..."i'm with your ghost again... can't wait til then" He could also be on a journey throughout the song to go back to the place where the accident happened, thinking he can change the circumstances.

but what in the world does the video mean. he walks out into the cold with a gun and she sets her barn on fire. stick to the lyrics and do the video based on the lyrics....
-
"I want to see you again"- he loves her
"but I'm stuck in colder weather"- he doesn't want a relationship right now
"Maybe tomorrow will be better-can i call you then?"-but he wants a relationship in the future
-
I think this song is about being addicted to meth (ice) and being stuck in colder weather is a metaphor for not being able to give it up. But knowing that one day he will and that soon will be better...

This song is about a man who has a desperate desire for self-actualization about who he is as a lover. A distinction that should be made is not that he is unwilling to commit to her, but that he is simply incapable of it, as evidenced by his realization (I've got a gypsy soul to blame / And I was born for leavin'). She obviously wants to be with him (She'd trade Colorado if he'd take her with him), and she wonders if they will ever be together (And wonders if her love is strong enough to make him stay). She gets her answer from his leaving (She's answered by the tail lights / Shining through the window pane).
While away from her, he is reminded of her wherever he goes (And in the waitress' eyes he sees the same 'ol light shinin'). He tells her that he wants to be with her, but she tries throughout the song to explain to him that he cannot be with her because it's just how he is. This incapability of loving her fully is the "colder weather," and it is sung in the chorus twice to simulate that he has been in a back and forth with his girl and him. He has a soul not meant to be tied down to one place. He denies his gypsy soul throughout the song (Maybe tomorrow will be better), until he has an epiphany and realizes the differences between him and his love (You're a lover / I'm a runner). In understanding the inherent differences between their souls, he is able to admit to himself that he will never change, and the only way to be with her is to accept it and work with it (Cause I'm a ramblin' man / I ain't ever gonna change / I gotta gypsy soul / And I was born for leavin'). Now that he has admitted it to himself, he wants to be with her (It's a shame about the weather / I know soon we'll be together). Finally he is hopeful that they will be together (I can't wait till then). -
This song really hit home for me because I am in love with Colorado and always have been. I met a guy who I loved and well he went astray and Colorado called my name. I love this man dearly and forever will, I wanted to show him that my love for him will forever be what he needed but he couldn't live with that. It still kills me to talk to him, because we always talk about us and how we miss each other. Everytime I hear this song it makes me cry because I knew I had to move on, for the better of both of us. I truely think that is what this song is about. A love that is not so true but yet they both still hold on. She loves him so much, yet he cannot let his jypsie soul go... So they do their best to move on.

This song is actually about drugs...colder weather is a metaphor for drugs...
-
I think it could be about a number of different situations. The drug thing sounds logical until I thought about the line that talked about the same light in the waitresses's eyes. That made me think that it is about a person that has been involved in a cheating relationship. He knows it is wrong...he tries to not let it happen again but it's like an addiction and he neds up cheating again. I don't know what the gun and the burning of the house stands for in the video...that's the reason I started searching for the meaning of the song..
-
I liked this song better the first time it was written. Back them it was called "Please come to Boston."
-
There are two women in this song. One is his true love, the other just a woman who loves him but is unreciprocated. Colder weather is a metaphor in the first verse for his grief and inability to love again because of that grief.
When he's on the road he sees a waitress that reminds him of his true love, she's dead and buried in Colorado. He wants to get back but is literally stuck in colder weather.
The song ends with him at her gravesite. -
what is super bizarre is that my brother (whom i hate to say... is WAY better than his ex gf)... picked up out of the blue and moved to colorado.... leaving her in cali. she was crushed...they lived together, had plans to marry, and dated for about 2 years. Essentially, she is content with a small life and my brother moves a mile a minute with traveling and constant promotions (reason for his relocation). he did/does love her.... but sought out the promotion anyways.
So basically... i believe "gypsy soul" is someone who doesnt really commit entirely and is constantly on the go, with little thought of love compromising his growth. Though he does love said "girl"... her love isn't enough to make him stay (at the moment.) Though he wants to let her know that he does in fact love her.. i view "stuck in colder weather" as a metaphor for an excuse for lack of commitment.. but this isnt necessarily forever... as shown in "tomorrow may be better"
long story short... love is mutual... girl wants commitment.. guy does not..... for the time being though -
I heard somewhere that Zac wrote this song about his brother's crack addiction and his longtime girlfriend leaving him because of it.

The Boot sat down with accomplished songwriter, Wyatt Durrette, to discuss the Zac Brown Band's latest single, 'Colder Weather.' Wyatt started the song, but it soon turned into a group collaboration with ZBB members Zac Brown and Coy Bowles, as well as Southern Ground Records artist Levi Lowrey.
There was a girl I was seeing, who lived in Kansas City. We really liked each other, but geography and timing just wasn't working for us. She was getting pretty frustrated with the whole thing and wanted me to slow down, as far as traveling so much and all those things. I wasn't willing to do that because we were just getting started, and I'm chasing my dreams.
I was going to see her. We were in Green Bay, Wisc. playing a show with Little Big Town, and it was pouring down snow. We were supposed to go to Kansas City the next day for some radio thing, but the radio people canceled. Instead, we just went on to wherever we were going next. I had to call her and tell her that I wasn't going to make it. She was not a happy camper. She let me have it. I hung up the phone, walked on the bus and wrote the chorus and the melody to the chorus.
Me and Zac worked on the first chorus together. I knew the song was special. You can just tell as a writer when you've written something that has a chance to be -
personally i think that the song is about a man who loves a women but is afraid of committment. he is constantly leaving her because he is afraid to be with her but the love he shares with her keeps drawing him back to her. in the end the woman dies in the barn when it catches on fire in the music video and i think he kills himself once he realizes she is dead when he sees the fire. In the last part when it says "I'm with you ghost again" that means that he killed himself to be with her. the term colder weather could symbolize earth compared to the afterlife. maybe he was debating whether to join her in the after life or stay on earth. when he says he cant wait he decides to kill himself to join her in the after life.

But what is the meaning behind the gun? The shot ?
