Breaking Benjamin: Evil Angel Meaning
Evil Angel Lyrics
Nothing but lies and crooked wings.
I have the answer, spreading the cancer,
You are the faith inside me.
No, don't
Leave me to die here,
Help me survive here.
Alone, don't remember,...
-
I have found 3 possible meanings for this song. I will explain them in the order I found them, which ironically is the reverse order of how much evidence I have for each.
The first one claims that the Evil Angel is the Angel of Death. Our singer is drowning in his own depression and is asking Death (or possibly God) to show mercy and take away his pain.
The second one shows the Evil Angel being a false comfort, such as alcohol. The lead singer and main songwriter had problems with alcohol, so it is relevant that this song should suggest that. Our character is asking his false comfort to "Don't/ leave me to die here/ Help me survive here/ alone" and then asks it to "Put me to sleep" and take all his pain away. Sadly, he realizes too late that his addiction will end him: "Why can't I breathe, Evil Angel?"
In the third interpretation, the Evil Angel represents love. The idea for this song likely came from Shakespeare's quote saying, "There is no evil angel but love". Love has cursed our singer and is destroying his life, and now he curses God, Cupid, and all the other controllers of love, giving them the name "Evil Angel". The evidence is as such:
"Hold it together, birds of a feather/ Nothing but lies and crooked wings" This image starts as of one of hope and is immediately shattered.
"You are the faith inside me". At first, I heard these lyrics as "Face" instead of "Faith". A face inside would be what we would expect from this attitude, but Burnley sings "Faith" instead. In an opposite way, this shows how love has two sides: a good one, and an evil one.
"No don't/ Leave me to die here/ Help me survive here /Alone", Shows the pain love has caused him, and how the only way he can stay sane, is to be loved by none.
"Put me to sleep, Evil Angel/ Open your wings, Evil Angel" shows his initial reaction to love; he was happy and welcomed it. Later, the chorus adds "Fly over me, Evil Angel/ Why can't I breathe, Evil Angel" as love takes over his life and suffocates him.
I can relate all too much with the third meaning. To keep it simple, the girl I have loved for three years is impossible for me to have. My unrequited feelings have come close to driving me to insanity and to depression. It was actually a conversation with her that sparked the idea of the Evil Angel being love itself. I showed her the song, and then she remembered the quote by Shakespeare. Now that I have that sentimental value to add to it, this song means all the more to me, and is easily my favorite Breaking Benjamin song. -
Its about Ben Burnley's addiction to alcohol. He calls it his 'Evil Angel' because he finds so much comfort in it but he knows its a bad thing.

Really... Everyone always goes to drugs and alcohol. I believe its suicide or a natural cause.
"Hold it together, birds of a feather,"
Keep your head in track(myself) and just fly away.
"Nothing but lies and crooked wings."
All they (friends) do is lie and not help.
"I have the answer, spreading the cancer,"
The only way for it to stop is to end everything.
"You are the faith inside me."
Evil angel, your the only faith in me to help it end.
"No, don't
Leave me to die here,
Help me survive here."
(To his friends and Family) I don't want to die! Help me live!
"Alone, don't remember, remember."
Help me not be alone to remember the bad times.
[Chorus:]
"Put me to sleep evil angel.
Open your wings evil angel."
Evil Angel kill me now. Help me end my misery.
"A-ah."
Scream of pain.
"I'm a believer,
Nothing could be worse,
All these imaginary friends."
I believe that nothing could be worse than all these people who don't care if i die.
"Hiding betrayal,
Driving the nail,"
I'm hiding my hurt and try hard to find you (the one who cares).
"Hoping to find a savior."
I'm trying hard(^)to find the one who notices me slipping away.
"No, don't
Leave me to die here,
Help me survive here.
Alone, don't
Surrender, surrender."
Notice me! I'm not alright. Help me be happy and don't give up if i fall.
"Oh.
Fly over me evil angel.
Why can't I breathe evil angel?"
I give up Evil Angel. Take me away.
then he asks why no one notices. while he looses his breath and gives up. -
I believe that this song is about depending on something evil to give you peace. When the song says "Put me to sleep, Evil Angel" it could mean someone using drugs to drown out the rest of the world. It could mean someone drinking alcohol and getting drunk to make things "fun" and more enjoyable.
So basically, don't depend on the things of life to give you peace, because in the end they become evil and will make things even worse. -
In all reasoning...I feel that this song is talking about a wide variety of things in life...whether it's drugs, love, death or spiritual he is asking for help and is willing to do whatever it's takes to get it. I maybe wrong but that's what I gathered. I'll listen to the song again and hopefully I'll get a better understanding

Demons are angels so first off that would be a evil angel "DEMON" second off it he is asking for help from the evil angel, third off He said "I'm a believer nothing could be worse" 2 Peter 2:21 says "It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them."
He said said hiding betrayal driving the nail JESUS he calls them imaginary friends, the song sounds so good but I think there is so much more to breaking benjamin, the albulm cover it looked so familiar to me then I realized he looks like someone on a cross check it out for your self. -
I also think that it's about Death. The protagonist is suffering under cancer (line 2) and he wants the pain to end and so he begs the Evil Angel to let him die.
That referes to the album art. You can see an angel with opened wings flying over a BB logo on a street. The logo referes to black magic, like always I think, and the angel is the Death coming for a driver to get him with a car accident. Also you can hear this theme, the Death (the Evil Angel) in lots of other songs, because most of the song on Phobia are about facing and dealing with Death. -
I definitely think it's about drugs, "Nothing but lies and crooked wings."= A false feeling he gets from it. "no, don't leave me to die here, help me survive here."= he needs it to mask the pain. "Why can't I breathe evil angel?"= there are some drugs out there that make it hard to breathe but they numb you, I have experience with that. I think the rest you can kind of put together if you think about it like this.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

I hear this song (which is one of my favorites from Breaking Benjamin) as someone going through a really rough time in their life, and finding a sort of comfort in someone unexpected. Like asking their 'evil angel' to help them through. And perhaps the name 'evil angel' represents someone who is going through something similar, if not the same.

I think this song is about someone who no longer wishes to live so they are telling the "Evil Angel" to put them to sleep or to kill them. they find life so pain ful that they feel that death would be more peaceful than to continue to live.

I see many meaning in this song. One popular one is that it is about drugs which i believe has a very well truth in it, but to descride drugs as an evil angel doesnt make much sense, although drugs being an evil. The evil angel is most often death as im sure most know. So the way i see it yes it could be about drugs.
Another easy to grasp veiw on this song is that it is a man in love with a very controlling suductive woman, one with emense beauty and who is destroying his life, he doesnt want to leave her even though she is doing so. So he speaks to be put to sleep to be controlled and seduced by this woman. In the end he sees she is killing him, but he cant understand why cause he thought her his savior hence "Why cant I Breathe? Evil Angel.
My belief though is that it is about a man living through the strength of this "Evil Angel" through a deal with the devil, and it is corrupting him turning him against his loved ones, but at this point he now sees what he has become, and is trying to turn back but as he is doing so the Evil Angel strips this power and life away leaving him asking "why cant I breathe? evil angel" -
i believe this song is about GOD DEMANS and DRUGS.
*searching for answers that are unknown.
*trying to get away from something (drugs)
-I have the answer, spreading the cancer, You are the faith inside me. No, don't Leave me to die here, Help me survive here."
*the drugs and demans are spreading.
*seeing demans and reaching out for God for answers.
"Put me to sleep evil angel.
Open your wings evil angel."
*I personaly think he wants to stop drugs and is seeking help.
"I'm a believer, Nothing could be worse, All these imaginary friends. Hiding betrayal, Driving the nail,
Hoping to find a savior."
*a believer in God.
*a recovering drug addict.
--they are using Cancer in a meaning such as the drugs and demans are getting worse (spreading). and they are reaching out for help. (God) -
This song is about cancer. (horsetig@yahoo.com)
