Breaking Benjamin: Evil Angel Meaning
Evil Angel Lyrics
Nothing but lies and crooked wings.
I have the answer, spreading the cancer,
You are the faith inside me.
No, don't
Leave me to die here,
Help me survive here.
Alone, don't remember,...

Explication/interpretation
In my opinion this song is about an addict's need for drugs and at the same time his hatred for them.
he says that lies and crooked wings are like birds of a feather, giving an image of something that looks holy, however, a part of it corrupt and unable to help
In "I have an answer spreading the cancer" the addict believes that drugs can cure the pain, however, they only spread the disease (the addiction)
the drugs keep his faith in feeling satisfied however, he has to keep asking them not to leave him, meaning they only temporarily ease his pain and he cannot survive without them. He doesn't want to remember his emotions and feels alone without the drugs.
he wants the drugs to put him to sleep, metaphorically meaning making him numb, clearing his head, or making him relaxed. open your wings implies that the speaker feels calm and embraced by the drugs and that they give him a sense of comfort.
The speaker believes and has hope for better things but keeps encountering people who are exactly like him and the drugs keep flowing. all only provide a temporary solace and the speaker believes that these people and the drugs are making him feel like everything seems better but the truth of the matter is that they are driving him closer to death "driving the nail"
He believes that they are all the same, hoping to find a "savior" from all of their pain and seeking solace in drugs.
the speaker begs the drugs to keep working in saying "don't leave me to die here." this is evident as die seems to be a metaphorical death, more pertaining to an emotional and mental death than a physical one. "Don't surrender" seems refer to the drug wearing off.
all in all the song shows the progression, from a depressed person taking drugs, to the effect of the drug on that person's mind and emotions, and then towards the end of the episode as the drug begins to wear off and the addict begins to feel depressed again. The song portrays the addiction in the hopeless sense, especially as the song is portrayed by Breaking Benjamin in elongated notes and crescendos, providing the listener with a yearning to help the speaker, as the singer's voice seems to beg the "evil angel" (drugs) to keep easing his pain -
^ the part where i said "so the person doesnt have to look over his shoulder every two seconds" i am sayin that evil is always looking to destroy anthing-- he is asking for a pass..
-
take it for what it says..
"I'm a believer, nothing could be worse
All these imaginary friends
Hiding betrayal, driving the nail
Hoping to find a savior"
"No, don't leave me to die here
Help me survive here alone"
is tryin to convince us that there is no savior and that we are here alone--there is no God to help us...
is convinced that there is no savior but recognizes that there is a dark side.. evil angel-- since the person is convinced there is no savior and recognizes all the evil in the world that there has to be something backing that evil--and decides to go and follow the evil side
now that the person is convinced there is evil-- he is completley consumed with it and asking the evil side to give him a break and doesnt have to look over his shoulder every two seconds afraid someone will attack him..
"why cant I breathe, evil angel?"
there is no rest with evil- evil will smother you- evil is death- if your consumed in it, what will it do to you?
there is no break in the end- evil is death -
its about someone he is in love with madly and she keeps him holding on she is all he has and everything else is falling apart and he needs her but she wont be the one to help he but she keeps filling him with false hope....trust me i know this song all to well

Before you read, WARNING: may not make a bit of sense, but it's an interpretation
Honestly, I think it could be that he's trying to find god. "Evil Angel" could Gabriel, the angel of death (hence, death=evil). He's found, or is trying to find, God, and people are trying to sway him from his faith. " Imaginary friends" are demons. " Hiding Betrayal" means that they seem to be helping, when in truth, just destroying. " Driving the nail" refers to the coffin, either to find Christ, or some way to save him from the world. The part " No don't leave me to die here; help me to survive here" is sort of like he's doesn't want anyone to give up on him, and help him. " When he says in the chorus " Why Can't I breathe, evil angel" it's referring to his death -
I think he's talking in a spiritual way like when he says "Al these imaginary friends"I think he's talking about he's demons and betraying him...and in the bigining of the son Hold it together birds of a feather nthing but lies and crooked wings"I think he's talking about satan,he's just pure lies...The part "Hopping to find a savior"may refer to God,he may be asking for God's help to save him from his life of torment and old ways but he's confused so he asks for the devil's help to(evil angel)because he thinks the devil is his friend and that he will save him but he knows the devil is traider and a lier. The part put me to sleep evil angel"may refer to him asking for his own death seaking to end his suferment and misery.....that's what I think I don't know..

-
Its so simple! He is an addict in misery and has had enough, he wants to die but he will not commit suicide that's why he asks for this evil angel (heroin) to finally finish him instead of torturing him (overdose maybe)

I think that the part that says "fly over me evil angel, why can't I breathe evil angel" part is saying he doesn't want to do and he doesn't understand why he is and he want to just forget about things for a while when it says "put me to sleep evil angel" because sleep is usually a good thing and healthy and it gives you time to recouperate who knows we all could be wrong but that's how I interperet it
-
I think this song is about someone who is going through a lot and attempting suicide like lots of songs on Phobia refer to suicide until the song Until The End where he says "why give up why give in its not enough it never is so I will go on until the end"

This is a Breaking Benjamin song which means it is probably deep, and using symbolism. If you really listen to their songs and can think outside the box you would know that. So you have to think deep and into the symbolism. I agree with the analysis of the evil angel being either some kind of addiction, or a person who he loves but is betraying him. The idea about it being someone wanting to be put out of their misery is interesting and one way to take it. Though I doubt that is what Ben was after when he wrote the song.
They aren't satanic. Two of the band members are confessed christians. -
I think what this song is trying to say that he was fighting a fight (drugs, life, whatever) with some people that he thought he could trust. Then they betray him, and he loses the battle. (I think it's death, but it could be anything)
-
To me, this song seems to be about someone that is going through a hard time in life, ak: maybe personal problem, maybe it is about someone dieing, and the person dying is saying to either help him survive or let him die, don't make him suffer, then when the one above lets him live on, he is seeing that everyone around him has no faith, or is losing faith, and he is asking the *evil Angel* ak: the angel that helped him live on, to let him die, because he don't want to live with non believers..and therefore, he recognizes the angel as evil, for letting him live now. I dunno, just kinda sounds that way to me.
