Incubus: Oil and Water Meaning
Song Released: 2007
Oil and Water Lyrics
And we've been trying, trying, trying
Ohhhhhhh... to mix it up.
We've been dancing on a volcano
And we've been crying, crying, crying
Over blackened soles
Babe, this wouldn’t be the first time
It will not be the...

There is a much deeper meaning to that song.
You need to KNOW the BIBLE and the Free Masons and the founding of Washington DC. -
But he also said, it wouldn't be the last time... Like he wants to try again...

Hi guys :) actually Incubus is one of my favorite band since I was 8 years old and now I am 19...
I am a totally alternative rock and heavy metal head-banger before I turn into a emo screamo hahaha
I have an original CD of light grenades so I know the meanings of the song
the song is very easy to understand
it is about a couple which is not compatible to each other that's why Brandon use oil and water to describe them.
in the first part Brandon says "you and I are like oil and water. we've been trying, trying, trying oh to mix it up" we all know that oil is impossible to mix up with the water because it has a low density than water. meaning the boy and the girl relationship is compared to an oil and water.
they are trying to be compatible to each other like in the line "we've been dancing on a volcano but we've been crying, crying, crying over blackened soul". The volcano represents the problems that they encounter and the reason why they are crying because they think that they are lying to each other that they can face it.
the chorus says "babe this wouldn't the first time, it will not be the last time. There is no parasol that could shelter this weather" the line means that they are now separating and it is not the first time and the last time that they separate to each other. Brandon has a good lyrical mind when he use a parasol in this song. parasol is a Japanese umbrella use in theater. I love the way how Brandon thinks. The weather that he is talking about in this song is the loneliness from his heart that could make him cry that's why he wants a parasol to be able for him to shade the tears flowing from his eyes :). I figure it out by just listening and searching.
"Ive been smiling with anchors on my shoulder. but Ive been dying, dying, dying oh to let them go" the anchor represents the problem of the boy that he carries in the relationship with the girl but he tries to smile even though he is tired of carrying it. wow Brandon uses anchors instead of a cross. what a lyrical genius.
in the 2nd chorus he says at the end "we've been trying to believe everything would get better" meaning he is done of pretending that he can make their relationship more longer.
and the last part he said "we've been lying to each other hey babe lets just call it, call it, call it oh what ii is? Oil and water it wouldn't be the first time" he is done in their relationship and that's all
hope you guys rate my interpretation because this is my favorite in the light grenades album
