You. You were a friend. You were a friend of mine I let you spend the night
You see it was my fault. Of course it was mine.
Here is the story of a lonely man who one day sat down in a conference room with his best friend, but at the time he didn't know she was the most important person of his life. (That's you, totty) He slept with her and had great sex, but regrets not having waited a little longer. So he blames himself for moving in too fast, for giving in to passion a little, or a lot too soon..
I'm too hard at work. Have you ever heard of anything so absurd ever in your life.
I'm sorry for wasting your time.
At the time of meeting this woman, this man only knew his work- which remains his only proven and pure passion. He doesn't know whether this is a pretext to his absent mindedness or not, but he senses that there is a tension between his "pure" passions and the love for this woman. He seems consumed by this inner struggle. So as a way of giving in to his own human nature, he accepts the fault and defeat, and apologizes for wasting her (the love of his life's) time.
See who am I to say this situation isn't great? When it's my job to make the most of it
Of course I didn't know that it would happen to me. Not that easy.
The man realizes (at some point) that the relationship is dying, or is already over. Upon realizing that he has lost his love, he feels responsible to make it right, to end it right. He is still confused about why things went wrong and wonders how it could happen to him. How could he take the turn and not see this result coming??! How easily could he have avoided this?!
----or---
He wonders, how could I HAVE FALLEN IN LOVE SO DEEP SO EASY. AND NOW BE SO HURT SO EASY.
Hey what's that you say? You're not blaming me for anything well that's great
But I don't break that easy. Does it fade away?
It appears that at this point, something has really changed. Prior to this, all arguments revolved around who was to blame, or who was to take the fault. At this point the is no blame being handed out, so it is apparent that their deeper feelings have changed. or perhaps "faded away"?
So that's why I'm, I'm apologizing now for telling you I thought that we could make it
I just don't get enough to believe that we've both changed.
He goes back to apologizing, because he is genuinely still in love with this woman. Still confusion, still love, and the only explanation is that the deepest of their hearts has change (and he doesnt feel like it is his).
See who am I to say this situation isn't great? It's my time to make the most of it
Of course I didn't know that it would happen to me. Not that easy.
Again, he feels an internal struggle. Her love, his love, their life together, and his passions all collide. He wants to explain and make sense of it. He needs to make the most of it, he wants to make it through this, but can only think of her body, her face, her voice, her smile, and all the little nuances that make her unique in this world.
If all along the fault is up for grabs why can't you have it
If it's for sale what is your offer, I'll sell it for no less than what I bought it for
Pay no more than absolutely zero.
By this point, the narrator has become somewhat enlightened. He realizes that there is a war going on, but that beneath that superficial war there is a deeper struggle. And in this struggle there are no guilty parties- there is only love and conflict. By this point, the situation has become one not of wrong doing, but of love itself. The search for blame is meaningless. At this point it is a struggle of LOVE vs. LOVE. And as we all have learned, in true love there is no blame, there is no judgement, and there is no wrong. Pure love itself is everything, and it is nothing. It is the absolute purity in life. It fills all voids, yet takes no space. It cannot be quantified.
Well neither one of us deserves the blame because opportunities moved us away
And it's not an easy thing to learn to play a game that's made for two that's you and me
The rules remain a mystery. See it can be easy.
At this point, the singer has realized that love is more than, "whose to blame". He begins to question whether love is just a game with undefined rules and boundaries. He wonders, still, if it was other opportunities that made that change. By now he is thinking like a free man again.
See who am I to say this situation isn't great? It's our time to make the most of it
How could we ever know that this would happen to me, not that easy, no
When all along the fault is up for grabs and there you have it
If it's for sale what is your offer, I'll sell it for no less than what I bought it for
Pay no more than absolutely zero.
He offers resolution. By now he has accepted his losses, but also seen that love isn't about who is to blame. In love , he knows, the blame is always up for grabs. She did this because I did that, because she did this because I did that... In the end it all amounts to zero. In the end, true love cannot be quantified. Even if it could, it would always amount to zero, because it is love. Love is not tangible. There is no amount, there is no blame. Love is just love. It amounts to zero in the end.
