Jason Mraz: The Remedy (I Won't Worry) Meaning
The Remedy (I Won't Worry) Lyrics
Cause you were born on the fourth of july, freedom ring
now something on the surface it stings
that something on the surface it kind of makes me nervous who...
-
About living with HIV/AIDS
-
Well I saw fireworks from the freeway
And behind closed eyes I cannot make them go away
----Temptations
'cause you were born on the 4th of July (freedom ring)
----born liberated
Well something on the surface it stings
I said something on the surface
Well it kinda makes me nervous
To say that you deserve this
And what kind of God would serve this
We would cure this dirty old disease
---STD/HIV/AIDS
Well, if you gots the poison
I gots the remedy
[Chorus]
The remedy is the experience
This is the dangerous liaison (I says)
The comedy is that it's serious
This is a strange enough new play on words
---lol, the remedy to avoid those desease
I say the tragedy is how you're gonna spend
The rest of your nights with the light on
So shine the light on all of your friends
Well it all amounts to nothing in the end
---talking about how liberated his life is
[Bridge]
And I won't worry my life away
Hey hey hey, oh oh
I won't worry my life away
Hey hey hey, oh oh
---- not rushing to have sex
Well I heard 2 men talking on the radio
In a cross-fire kind of new reality show
Uncovering the ways to plan the next big attack
Well they were counting down the ways to stab a brother in the Be right back after this
The unavoidable kiss
With the minty fresh death breath is sure to outlast this catastrophe
Dance with me
-----Media
Well if you gots the poison, I gots the remedy
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
When I fall in love, I take my time
There's no need to hurry when I'm making up my mind
You can turn off the sun, but I'm still gonna shine
And I'll tell you why -
It basically mean not to worry so much. So, it could be about cancer. "Something on the surface it stings. That something on the surface, it kinda make me nervous. Who says that you deserve this, and what kind of god would serve this? *we will cure this old dirty disease* cause if you go the poison, I got the remedy" then there's this whole bit with: "I won't worry my life away". See? It's both.

I'm actually surprised that the person who wrote that this song had broader political connotation didn't get more stars. I think there is an obvious tie in to the climate of the day (and I wouldn't necessarily say it's strictly Bush-era politics but everything post 9-11) and looking at the world through the eyes of a man who's friend is sick. The contrast of fighting for your life and the preciousness of life against the back-drop of the ridiculousness of the fear-mongering "news" networks and the contrasting Fresh Mint commercial that clearly says that neither is important above life itself. It's just brilliant. So in short I think his stated inspiration for the song, his friend, plus the realities of a post 9-11 climate of fear-for-ratings, is a good interpretation of the lyrics.
-
Charlie Mingroni had a rare cancer. He wrote it for Charlie due to his cancer, and the beginning is saying how Charlie was born on the fourth of july. He made it through cancer and is fine today. It's not about 9/11.....
-
Although this song was originally written as a tribute to Jason Mraz's friend, who was diagnosed with cancer, I think the lyrics portray a really great attitude about life in general. Whether you've got a life-threatening disease or you're perfectly healthy, "the remedy" is experiencing life instead of worrying so much about whether you're living it right. It's not about the time you have left, it's about all the awesome experiences you've allowed yourself to encounter in this life.
-
I am there right now, no time for vying for you down below, just letting you know I am still here and getting so tired, and ya I flipped off the building for you but, how much do I have to say, I will worry
hungry, will follow the pathway you hoped we could take together in five, need something real to sustain me, Matt5:5
Sounds like he could care less about his friends getting with a girl he likes, but he does, saying the moment is what should be seized to find something real
and here we go, the path less spoken -
It is about a friend of Mraz who got cancer, but remained optimistic.
-
I really cannot understand how anyone could read these lyrics and not see the obvious reference to the political situation. I think there is a reference to his friend, but the general tenor of the song is a response to the post-911 climate.
Without going through the song line by line, I'll try to make clear why my interpretation is as described:
"a crossfire kind of new reality show" ...you do know what "Crossfire" was, no? It was a political talk show on CNN. Mraz remarks that they were talking on this 'crossfire kind' of show, about plan for the "next big attack". The next two lines, I think, are the most cynical in the whole song -- "well they were counting down the ways to stab the brotha in the be right back after this
the unavoidable kiss, where the minty fresh death breath is sure to outlast this catastrophy". Mraz is mingling talk of the war (the attack) and its cost (stab the brotha in the back...) with talk of the commercial institutions that advertise during these kinds of shows (be right back.., minty fresh death breath); that is, he's implying that they are all intimately related with regard to the war. Pretty ingenius, but that's how good songwriters do it.
I think the "comedy is that its serious" phrase refers to the "war on terror" and that the "strange enough new play on words" is to be taken as ambiguous... It refers to both the preceding line of the song, and to the President's catchphrase.
Nearly every line in the song has a more or less straightforward interpretation as part of a peacenik political statement.
His not worrying is just a way of refusing to stand inside the box that the Bush Administration is constructing, where everyone is afraid of further terrorist attacks. -
it was on j-mraz's website, he said his friend was diagnosed with cancer. (hence, the "dirty old disease") He was telling his friend to live out his life instead of worrying about when he is going to die. (im stilklcurious on what the bridge means though)
