Realize that our narrator is not 'direct quoting' his father; rather he is sarcastically rejecting his dad's tendencies to "make mountains out of [molehills]" and succumb to worry and cowardice rather than take bold action and face down new challenges.
The concept of "sleep[ing] all day" is a metaphor for willful ignorance of necessary action an individual knows he or she must take because of fear, laziness, or a lack of true self-worth.
