Melanie Martinez: Dead to Me Meaning
Dead to Me Lyrics
I'll shed a tear with your family
I'll open a bottle up
Pour a little bit out in your memory
I'll be at the wake dressed in all black
I'll call out your name but you won't call back
I'll hand a flower to your mother when I...

#1 top rated interpretation:Everyone's saying this is about Melanie losing sanity and murdering the guy that cheated on her, but I couldn't disagree more. It's more-so about her trying to get him out of her head. He is't actually dead, but his existence, to her, is. The lyrics about the funeral just adds to this figurative language. He isn't literally dead, but he's dead to her. She doesn't fuck with him anymore.

#2 top rated interpretation:Crybaby broke up with her boyfriend, but can't stop thinking about him. It's infuriating, stressful, and driving her mad. She needs to find a way to get him out of her head, to wipe him off the face of her earth, before she loses her mind (I mean, in Mad Hatter, I'm pretty sure she already HAS lost her mind, but you get what I mean). He also probably gave her a bracelet, one that used to mean a lot to her, that she buried deep underground ("Bury your bracelet six feet under the dirt").

#3 top rated interpretation:Crybaby loved someone but they weren't who she thought they where. She needed to "Kill Them" or get them completely out of her head or she'll take him back. She's sorry because she really liked him and thought he was a good person but he pushed to until she knew the truth.

I know this song isn't actually about murder and that it's just a metaphor, but it would be fun if it was because in "high school sweethearts" she says "if you cheat you will die", so she could be planning to kill him or WANT to kill him since he's dead to her because of what he did.

idrk if this song is about crybabys life or not but i dont think it is. I think this song is about not being able to get someone that you loved or were friends with that was very toxic out of your head, shes not saying shes actually gonna kill them, just that she never wants to see them again or wants to stop thinking about them. i know this from personal expirence with sm like this. but i truly do think this is what its about.

okay so like everyone is saying this is about melanie killing her cheating bf or something, what I think is she WANTS to kill someone and the whole funeral thing is a metaphor for smthing else, cause when she says "I NEED to kill you" She didn't say she did she said she needs to, "That's the only way to get you out of my head,Oh I need to kill you, to silence all the sweet little things you said" is her saying she wants him off the planet so she can forget about him

Crybaby was in a relationship of some kind (my interpretation is that they were narcissistic but could be wrong) and is trying to move on. But he keeps coming back for her and so eventually she's driven to "killing" him (forcefully cutting all ties with him and vanishing from his life). The reason I think it was narcissistic is for several reasons. While other relationships could potentially finish by "killing" the partner, it is rather extreme so it'd have to be pretty toxic to go to that length, which narcissism is. Also, the lines "I used to say I'm sorry For all of the stupid shit you've done" implies it as well, because narcissists always find a way to put the blame back onto the victim.

I believe this song is about a cheating partner, Crybaby is sick of him and wants him out of her head. I don’t believe that the song means physically killing him but acting like he’s dead to forget him. In the line “Can you cheat from underground?” She’s referring that she “killed” him as he cheated on her. The beginning of the song’s line are as if there will be a funeral. The thing that makes my interpretation what it is, is the line “Because baby you’re dead TO ME” This is bad lol

Melanie had someone who meant a lot to her, Could be platonic or not, either way that person had to leave. Melanie couldn't get that person out of their head so she went and "killed him".
-
She is talking about someone stuck in her mind. He won’t go away and she acts like he’s dead. She doesn’t want to think about him so she says he’s dead to her. This never had anything to do with murder.

She love a man but he cheated on her and she killed him and dressed in all black at his funeral to show that she doesent care what she did.

This song is about a guy she was with. He cheated on her, but he didn't think she knew. She kept thinking about it and she lost it and killed him,but she just acted like she didn't and went to the funeral and mourned.
