Melanie Martinez: Dollhouse Meaning
Dollhouse Lyrics
We'll be a perfect family.
When you walk away, is when we really play
You don't hear me when I say,
"Mom, please wake up.
Dad's with a slut, and your son is smoking cannabis."
No one...
-
I think that her mom and dad abuse her(don't let them look in the kitchen) and her brothers raping her (be a good sister)
-
For some reason I really wanna get to the bottom of this song,
It's pretty obvious in the song that the mom's a alcoholic, the dad's a cheater, and the brother's a drug addict. The girl in the song is all caught up in the middle of this and everyone believes her family is perfect. But really it's some abusive household. The phrase "No one ever listens" probably means nobody listens to the girl when she says her family abuses her. And the phrase, "Don't let them see what goes down in the kitchen" means don't let people know how abusive they really are.
And during the chorus of this song it sounds like how they get ready and become perfect to make sure people think they're the "perfect" family. And the phrase "I see things that nobody else sees" means the girl in this song she's the only one sees how the family is really like.
Another part in the song that goes "Uh-oh! She's coming to the attic, plastic, go back to being plastic" means someone's going over to the family's house and they need to go back to acting perfectly.
I hope this interpretation helps you understand the song -
I know for a fact this song is singing about a abusive family. Crybaby's mom is a alcoholic, her dad is a cheater, and her brother is a smoker. And everyone thinks the family is perfect but really it's not. The phrase,"don't let them see what goes down in the kitchen" means don't let them see the abuse.
-
I think this song is about how everyone thinks cry baby has a perfect family living the 'white pickett fence' life because they seem so wholesome and happy in public but behind closed doors they're typically dysfunctional the dad is having an affair, the mom knows the dad is having an affair so she drinks and chooses to ignore it and her brother is a stoner.
"no one ever listens, this wallper glistens, hope they don't see what goes down in the kitchen"
I think this means that she feel's like no one listens because she's basically calling out for help and everyone is distracted by maintaining their perfect façade whilst indulging themselves in alcohol, canabis and women. I think what goes down in the kitchen would be cry baby's parents arguing the mom probably about where the dad has been and the dad complaining about the mom's drinking.
“picture, picture, smile for the picture, pose with your brother won't you be a good sister”
The family wanting to maintain their public image and their 'perfect'life.
“I see things that nobody else see's”
Because they put on their 'doll faces'for the public nobody really looks at them but when they're at home she can see how imperfect their life is and all the flaws within her family; “mom please wake up dad's with a slut and your son is smoking canabis” “everyone thinks that their perfect, please don't let them look through the curtain”,because where no one can see they reveal their true selves.
“hey girl, look at my mom she's got it going on, ha, your blinded by the jewellery"
Just because her mother wears nice clothes, jewellery and smile's, doesn't mean she's happy it's just the distraction
“when you turn your back she brings out her flask and forgets his infidelity”
This is how she distracts herself whilst she's distracting everyone else.
-
I think that the meaning behind the song dollhouse is that people aren't always what they act like inside of their home. Someone could act 'perfect' outside of their home but be insane inside of it. It's just like celebrity's, people think that they are perfect but when something goes wrong or they finally get a chance just to be a normal human people get mad.
-
I think that this song is about how because the way you act around them, people assume that you're perfect and have a great life and sometimes you'd like to think that to but they don't understand that just because you're this doesn't mean you're not that. Like me. When I'm at school, I pretend that my life isn't an absolute shit-show. But when I'm home, I cry. My mom has epilepsy so she can't do anything. On top of that she's poor and can't really buy food. My sister is always high and I'm always bouncing from one house to another so it's really difficult. But anyways, this song is explaining that you can't hide behind a wall.
-
I think the song dollhouse is about how even the perfect looking family and house can hide the deepest secrets.
-
This song reminds me of what goes down in my prison. My mom is more fucked up than you could ever imagine. She abuses me mentally, physically, and sexually(she's gay), and I think she even takes drugs. I was left to raise my sister, eleven, and brother, seven. But around my friends and their parents, she acts like my dad is the weird one, fucking us up and abusing me sexually.
Tentically what I think Dollhouse is saying is that in open eyes, they're as perfect as can be while behind closed doors, Hell takes over.
Sorry about the pity party. I just wanted to get my point across. -
Is it just me or does anyone else sense a further meaning when you compare the lines:
1) Picture, picture, smile for the picture
Pose with your brother, won't you be a good sister?
Everyone thinks that we're perfect
Please don't let them look through the curtains
and
2) I see things that nobody else sees -
I like to think of this song as the Kabra Family song (if ur a 39 clues fan u know why)//// It’s about crybaby’s broken family and that they ignore her////“don’t let them see what goes down in the kitchen” Her father is ‘courting’ the slut and she does not want to see it//// “know one ever listens this wallpaper glistens” She try’s to tell everyone she’s not perfect but everyone has to be asses and ignore her and say she’s crazy
[I decided not to go further in the interpretation] -
I honestly think that its talking about someone being interacted with a demon or something cause it says "I see things that no one else sees" Like is that not enough evidence. So i think that's what its trying to say i also think its talking about how her family isn't perfect.
-
I think it refers to the so-called popular people or bullies. Everyone thinks that the popular people are perfect and think of them as nothing less. In all reality, everyone has there flaws but for some people, it is hard to show. As for bullies, no one thinks that they have any feelings because they hurt people. In all reality, they hurt others because they have been hurt themselves. The part "Picture picture smile for the picture" may be referring to society. Everyone wants to look happy on the outside when they're dying on the inside.

This is the theme song for the dilaurnetis family in pretty little liars. lol
-
I think this song is about how rich families are always perceived as being perfect etc, when in reality, they are usually the most broken family wise. They always have to act perfect because this is what people expect them to be like when I’m realty behind closed doors, they’re fucked up. Simple as that;(
-
I honestly think ‘dollhouse’ means that even though people may act perfect, down inside they’re dying or are completely imperfect.
Another meaning could be that she is trying to make a song relevant to everyday families. Many aren’t perfect, but if they seem like they are, that you need to look down deeper in a person or some people.
