Melanie Martinez: Dollhouse Meaning

Album cover for Dollhouse album cover

Dollhouse Lyrics

Hey girl, open the walls, play with your dolls
We'll be a perfect family.
When you walk away, is when we really play
You don't hear me when I say,
"Mom, please wake up.
Dad's with a slut, and your son is smoking cannabis."

No one...

It's about a "perfect" family which actually...isn't perfect at all.Mom is an alcoholic, dad is cheating on her, and cryaby's brother is smoking cannabis. I believe that with this song, Melanie is trying to show us that we may believe something is perfect but it actually isn't.

So the song is basically about Melanie who live with her family and 'everyone Thinks that we're Perfect' and every one of them are in separate rooms so "no one ever listen"because no can hear Melanie and she try to contact the girl so she can Play with her. Its just my opinion don't judge

So basically, Melanie lives with a family who think they're perfect. But her mother is an alchoholic, her brother a drug addict, her father a cheater. Melanie is the most righteous of them, and sings that nothing is perfect.

Dollhouse is about cry baby having a "perfect" family in front of people but when you look away there not all perfect.

Dollhouse is about a "perfect family." On the outside. But on the inside they're a mess. It's a two-faced family really. But, it's also about how people view celebrity's. We expect famous people to be perfect. But when they do something that shows people they are human, people don't like it. So it really has two meanings.

They think that crybaby has the perfect life (e.g. big house, pretty clothes ext..) but they don't see what actually happens.

No one ever listens, (they think she has such a perfect life so they don't think she's serious?? Idk)
    the wallpaper glistens,
Don't let them see what goes down in the kitchen (possibly being abused)

Hey girl, look at my mom,
She's got it going on, ha, you're blinded by her jewellery,
Uh oh, She's heading to the attic,
Plastic, go back to being plastic
(Go back to being plastic could mean go back to being normal and perfect and uh oh, She's heading to the attic could mean that she's hidden her alcohol to try and make her stop drinking, idk)

She's trying to fix her family on her own but it's not working, or she's had enough of being abused (one day they'll see what goes down in the kitchen, meaning that her voice will eventually be heard)

Idk but this is kinda what I gathered form the song, it's probably all wrong but idrc

The first meaning is Crybaby's family. Her Dad is cheating, her mom knows he's cheating so she turned to alchohol to get away from stress, and her brother is engulfed in the life of drugs, and Crybaby herself is very emotional on the outside and secretly a psychopath. But no one could tell because of their nice house and perfect curb appeal and clothing.

The song is also about how people view celebrities. Famous people are expected to be perfect and awesome. But when they do something to show that they are human and not omnipotent, people don't like it.

I think Melanie was trying to explain a situation that she was in, maybe her father was an infidel, and her mother knew so started drinking, and her brother was a stoner.

Melanie is talking about the town she lived in. The families were very different when nobody else could see them. Like some parents cheated on the parent and their child didn't know. And teenagers could smoke cannabis or weed without the parents knowing this.

Like a dolllhouse you ever notice it's imperfections until take time to step back and look at it. Like when she says 'when you walk away is when we really play' it's like people say your daughter is an angel you go home and she take of the mask she puts on for the pubilc eye. So basiclly this song is talking about the play Cry Baby's family puts on for people to make them seem like the most perfect family.

She is talking about how people think her family is perfect but In reality No one really see's what really happens and how jacked up her family is nd no one realizes it.

Dollhouse can be what you make of it. A lot of people said that Dollhouse was creepy and that this isn't pop music because nobody writes songs like that.
But in reality, Melanie was portraying what almost all first world families look like today: broken and selfish. Mommy's an alcoholic, Daddy's a slut and her brother smokes cannabis.
She's the only one who can be possibly classified as a perfect doll... But even she has flaws.
This is basically saying that all humans are like dolls: we act like perfect barbies but nobody's actually perfect. Putting on two pounds of dolly makeup will not change that.

It means that you must really know someone in order to know them its not always what it seems. <3

I think this song means that not everything is perfect. Families aren't perfect, people aren't perfect, nothing is perfect, and this song is about what really goes on on the inside of the "Perfect family"

People aren't always as they seem. They may be hiding something in their picture perfect home.
