Melanie Martinez: High School Sweethearts Meaning
High School Sweethearts Lyrics
These are the requirements
If you think you can be my one and only true love
You must promise to love me
And damn it, if you fuck me over
I will rip your fucking face apart
Step one
You must accept that I'm a little...

#1 top rated interpretation:I think that high school sweethearts is about crybaby realizing why all her exes Alphabet Boy, Jhonny, Blue Boy ect. didn't work out. So she makes sure that doesn't happen anymore, she releases the song listing her dating rules. I think i'm pretty close I don't know. :)

2TOP RATED
#2 top rated interpretation:Crybaby is listing the requirements for her to love you. She says that they have to:
1. Accept her for who she is
2. Learn to be with her until the end ('finish line' is a metaphor for 'end').
3. Give her passion and love; don't judge her
4. Not be ashamed of their relationship
5. If they cheat, then, well... they'll regret it.
I think she's realizing why none of her ex-boyfriends or past crushes worked out (Alphabet Boy, Blue Boy, Johnny, etc.). They weren't her type; they were a waste of her heart. -

#3 top rated interpretation:In order for Melanie to love you, you must follow the rules
-
High School Sweethearts is quite clearly set out. Crybaby has certain standards if you want to be her lover. Other girls should not have her lover control her and have rules to an extent to respect them. Crybaby's standards were:
1. To accept her for who she is and her craziness
2. To have a faithful, loyal, loving relationship till the very end (death).
3. Encourage her, respect her passion, don't make fun of what she loves.
4. You can't be embarrassed about their relationship, you have to stay loving and caring outside, in front of others.
5. If you're expecting to do absolutely nothing and for her to give all the love and do everything and you won't work, no point going into a relationship with her.
6. If you cheat, you messed with the wrong girl.
7. If you can't handle her and her way of showing love, don't waste her and your time.
The song's not saying to have these specific standards, but to not let others take control and walk all over you in a relationship, you should have a say.
I didn't know what Step 4 and Step 7 meant.
(Step 4: Give me more, give me more, more.)
(Step 7: This one goes to eleven.)
Sorry! -
I honestly think this song is about how there are rules for dating, and if you cross them, you break Crybaby's heart. You must love her, be with her till the end, not waate her time.
The song is actually trying to talk about how many highschool relationships end up in naught, and it's sort of telling us to be careful, in a sense. -
High School Sweethearts is about teenagers that date in high school and focus on popularity and looks, instead of the heart and personality. Melanie mentions it’s a waste of time, because most of the time dating in highschool isn’t lifelong, genuine, and doesn’t last. She’s saying she wants a lover who actually cares about her, and not a casual high school relationship that won’t last.
-
In my perspective, I think this song is about how Crybaby wants to be with someone who would accept her the way she is, wouldn't cheat on her, treat her right, and more. Due to all the other ones she's been with (Johnny, Blue Boy, Alphabet Boy, etc.) she wants someone who would make it with her to the end.
-
After Crybaby experienced many heartbreaks from her previous boyfriends she wants a guy who loves her for who she is,never cheat on her and not be afraid to show off their relationship
-
Melanie wrote this song for her current boyfriend Oliver Tree.
I think it's kinda cute to write a song for your boyfriend. -
She is saying that if people is not right to be with her to not bother and find someone else. And if they cheat Melanie/crybaby will be mad and break up with them. If you don’t agree I don’t know what to say...
-
Crybaby is listing these rules about what you have to do to be her true love and gets heartbroken by many guys who didn't treat her right. And is telling guys not to go for her if they're not her type.
