Melanie Martinez: Strawberry Shortcake Meaning
Strawberry Shortcake Lyrics
Stand back, watch it taking shape
Wondering why I don't look like Barbie
They say boys like girls with a tiny waist
Now, my mama's preaching to make sure I'm pure
But, I never really cared about that shit...

#1 top rated interpretation:She is telling women that they need to stand up to men and the next time they try to do bad things to them tell the men to stop.

2TOP RATED
#2 top rated interpretation:It is about how the world treats women. When she says “feeling unsure of my naked body” she means some girls are insecure about how the look. “It's my fault because I put icing on the top now the boys want a taste of the strawberry shortcake” saying that girls get blamed by others when they are inappropriately touched by someone such as “ your skirt shouldn’t have been that short”. She is standing up for equal rights.

3TOP RATED
#3 top rated interpretation:Melanie is standing up for what isn't fair. women often get blamed because assholes treat and touch women like property and women get blamed- saying that the women are to blame for showing skin. Melanie is pointing out how women get blamed because guys can't keep their hands to themselves. another thing is she points out her mixed feeling about her body. she wants boys to notice her body (¨boys like girls with a tiny waist¨)because every girl ants to feel pretty but guys only notice her legs, boobs, butt and thighs. shes saying how it's her fault for looking nice and wearing what she wants and feels comfortable with, but shes getting shit on because men don't know how to be respectful. you don't get attention from boys for looking pretty, you get it from having big boobs and a good ass. (Mikey's eyes seem to be glued to her chest/ so im stuffin my bra so that mine look the best... instead of making me feel bad for the body I love/ just teach him to keep it in his pants and tell him to stop)is saying she should be able to wear what she wants without havingto worry about boys hands where they shouldnt be. this song is great and relatable to any girl.

This song (to me) is about society bashing on women for what happens to them and the men who inflicted the trauma are not accountable but the girl who just “wore the wrong clothes” is.The song is pretty much brining attention to and holding up the middle finger to the quote “boys will be boys”.This is in my opinion the best song from this album the meaning is just so powerful and hits really close to home

This song is about society setting standards and objectifying young girls/ladies/women. Society has made it clear they want girls to look a specific way, causing them to become insecure about how they look and if they have the right body.
‘Now my mama’s preaching to make sure I’m pure, but I never really cared about that s*** before.’ She didn’t care about how she looked before, but now she does.
‘Feeling unsure of my naked body.’
‘Wondering why I don’t look like Barbie. They say boys like girls with a tiny waist.’
‘Gotta make sure that my legs are shiny, hot wax melting burn my skin.’
‘Everyone around me are watching closely, cause it’s how I look and not what I think.’
These are some examples of what types of insecurities girls have that Melanie has displayed in her song. In the chorus, the girls are blamed for dressing up and the boys can’t help being attracted to them. First society wants girls to look beautiful and in a certain way, and when they dress up nicely, it looks like they want boys to be coming for them or to have s** with them.
In the bridge, Melanie’s asking for society to just respect people and how they look. Always love your bodies no matter what gender you are!
Sorry for the long explanation, and if I got anything wrong. -
I have nothing to say but I absolutely love this song not only for the tune but the meaning is so strong to younger girls

My interpertation is how girls have a "beauty standard" they have to live up to in order to be pretty. It also shows that girls cant wear what they want unless they want to be called things. For example if i wear a skirt/shorts with a crop top/strapless shirt i'll be called a slut or a whore. But if i wear baggy clothes they'll say i don't try hard or sum. It also shows the school dress code system and how it affects only girls. The lyrics: "Look around the room to whoever wants me.
Got boys acting like they ain't seen skin before.
Got sent home to change 'cause my skirt is too short." "People all around me watching closely
'Cause it's how I look and not what I think.
Mikey's eyes seem to be glued to her chest
So, I'm stuffing my bra so that mine look the best" "Instead of making me feel bad for the body I got
Just teach him to keep it in his pants and tell him to stop". these lyrics remind me of the unfair sexism and rules because girls cant wear what they want. Lastly, it reminds us how vulernable guys think us girls are. -
I think that this song is about r@pe and s3xual assault being blamed on the girls in this case ( because it does happen to men) because of their clothes or actions. Seen from’ it’s my fault cause I but icing on top’
-
well, the song begins with her looking shy and covering up, and laters says how boys only notice the boobs, butt and legs etc. which i think is complete shit. boys need to start respectecting.

“Strawberry shortcake” at the beginning crybaby fells insucure of how she looks,
-
I think it’s about how crybaby(or people) gets raped and the raspiest says how it’s the her fault for showing to much skin (“got boys acting like they ain’t seen skin before”). And how this gets her insecure about how her body looks (“ feeling unsure of my naked body”) and boys only caring how peoples ass, breasts,(“ mikeys eyes seemed to be glued to her chest”) legs, and thighs look. At the end is teaching crybaby (or people) it’s not her fault and people have to teach the boys to just keep it in their pants.
-
I think the same because in the song it says"boys saying it's my fault,it's my fault cause I put iceing on top know the boys want a taste of the strawberry shortcake".is to blame girls and to touch them in any way they can like it's their property and cry baby is trying to show it and stop it cause girls always can get blamed for when they show skin it's not our problem if we want to we want.
