Melanie Martinez: The Bakery Meaning
Song Released: 2020
The Bakery Lyrics
La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
Pack it, box it, flip it, top it
With a bow tied, ribbon, stop it
Eating all the rainbow cookies
Pies are flying through the roof
Not my first pick but I'll do...

#1 top rated interpretation:The Bakery is about Melanie Martinez and her experience at a bakery when she was in high school. Melanie seemed to enjoy the job at first but then she realizes how awful her boss is. She describes her boss as virgin Mary, This meaning she looks like a very angelic person but her rules and personality in the job is awful. Referencing "Sent me to purgatory" A catholic theory (place) where Christians go to get their sins purified with torture. The sword swallowing at the end represented Melanie getting cut with a knife by the boss or her straining her voice for the music industry and selling herself as a product.

#2 top rated interpretation:this song would represent melanie's hate towards her boss in the bakery for domineering over her and being so nitpicky. she's being sarcastic in the first line of verse 2: 'my boss is mother mary'

Melanie Martinez herself said that this song was about when she got fired from a bakery she worked at when she was in high school. In the first verse she implies that she did enjoy working there in the beginning and the sweets that were there since it was a bakery. In the second and third verse she then it becomes much more clear the hate overlapped the love she had for it because of her boss. Her boss was the reason that she that she hated it so much. She lost the amount of fun and enthusiasm she had for her job because of her strict, nit-picking a**hole of a boss.
