Owl City: Hospital Flowers Meaning
Hospital Flowers Lyrics
I survived a dreadful accident
in the car crash of the century
My shattered hopes collapsed on cold cement
But in the back of the ambulance,
I'd never felt so content
Chorus
A high-speed collision gave a new sense of sight to...

#1 top rated interpretation:Young was involved in a car crash. Recovering from this accident, he realized what life was about. This made him find grace in the hospital and made his happiness even more than before. This "grace" could be God because of another song on this album entitled "Galaxies" which describes Young's relationship with God.

#2 top rated interpretation:Young is probably not describing a literal accident but a spiritual one. He is saying that a true encounter with the god of the "galaxies" will change you forever and give you "a new sense of sight" and "happiness." if you are honest with god and learn what he is really about you will be changed forever. His collision with god matched his own will vs. Gods will, and he now sees that gods will is for his good in the end and way better than anything he could have dreamed. Because of this switching of trajectory in his life he had to let stuff go which hurts ("my burns were third degree") but god always heals and restores if we let him

Read about "Out of body" experiences, OBE. The song is a retelling from the perspective of someone who has an OBE after a car crash.
This verse starts the illusory:
"A high-speed collision gave a new sense of sight
To me
And now my vision can render the scene
A blurry image of wreckage and roadside debris
Happiness returned to me
Through a grave emergency"
If you read about OBE's after accident's (or you have had one yourself), this is a perfect description of what happens. Your concious awareness leaves your body and its as if you are floating above your own body and can see things happening to your physical body from outside of it.
The rest of the song builds on this experience.
Almost all of Adam's inspiration comes from his appreciation for the things we cannot see, the collective unconscious. If you listen to his music in this light, it all becomes crystal clear.
"Reality is a lovely place, but I wouldn't want to live there". -
Ann Marie did NOT die! Nor did he get into this "car crash" he's telling the story from someone else's point of veiw. A guy who was saved by god and got a message from it. The message is, life is fragile. Live it while you have the chance. Someday it may be over unexpectedly. That's my two cents.
-
I'm not positive but I think this song is about the car crash that killed annmarie who lonely lullaby is written about
-
I don't remember what interview this was said in, but Adam said the song was about one of his friends who got into an accident.
-
Adam says in an interview that its about his friend who got into an accident.

Like almost all of Young's songs, it's not literal at all and everything in the song has a secondary meaning. This is one of those songs that can either be interpreted to be about a broken relationship and surviving that, or about finding grace through God, or perhaps even both.
-
I believe its about how God can bring you through the toughest of things if you truely believe and if you let him. Sometimes God allows big things to happen in order to open our eyes to better things in hopes that we we listen, learn, and change.
-
Adam Young got into a car crash and realized that God loves him no matter what happens and God gave Adam another chance for life
-
It's not about a car crash at all
-
This song is about a suicidal person that thinks no one cares about him, that gets in a huge car accident, and feels happy that he got hurt/might die "in the back of the ambulance I've never felt so content" he waks up the next day in the hospital alive. He feels strange at first, but he sees someone sent him flowers he realises people do care about him, and he probably stopped being suicidal afterwards, "happiness returned to me through a grave emergency".

This song is such a great story. (Adam Young's quite the storyteller. owo) It's about a person who hates life. This person gets into an accident and survives, and this makes him/her realize that he should be happy for the life that he/she has, because it could be over before he/she knows it.
-
After a terrible accident, he realized that he needed grace. The grace made him happy again.
