Owl City: Lonely Lullaby Meaning
Lonely Lullaby Lyrics
Sing to me and sooth the ring in my ears,
Overcast these gloomy nights wear on,
But I'm holding fast because it's darkest just before the dawn.
I sang my princess fast asleep,
'Cause she was my dream come...

#1 top rated interpretation:Lonely Lullaby is about how Adam Young dated AnnMarie Monson when they were in high school. He loved her with all his heart but she moved to Califorina when she went to collage and Adam was heart broken. But before she had moved away he used to sing her a lullaby to sleep every night because AnnMarie was his princess. But now all those love filled lullabies turned to lonely ones. All he wants her to know that is that he loved her with all his heart and know mater what, he will never forget her, because she was his dream come true.

#2 top rated interpretation:I think that this is a song about (AnneMarie) with whom he was very much in love with. The chorus shows a kind of anger/outburst. My personal interpretation is that he loved her more than she of him. She must have left him, or they had a short relationship, because he is "holding fast because it's darkest just before the dawn". Also, he says "remember me?" as if almost mockingly.
"Oh Annmarie, believe me, I loved you."
Also says of a past relationship.
I don't know. It is a beautiful song with intimacy because of the piano. It is one of my favorites. -

#3 top rated interpretation:This song was definately the most beautiful song I have ever heard.. There was a girl who he loved very much named annmarie and she passed away. He sang her lullabies, but now they've become lonely lullabies because she's dead. Don't worry adam, she can hear you from heaven. (..:

The person who wrote about Ann Marie being Ann Marie Monson is correct. She’s not dead. I graduate with her. She was our homecoming queen. However, they were wrong about Adam and Ann being high school sweethearts. There’s no way Ann would have even looked at this guy in High School. She was super popular and dated only popular kids. Adam ran with a different crowd and after high school he didn’t even go to college, in fact he worked at the coco cola manufacturing facility in my hometown for a few years. He was making music in the evenings and when his music started to gain traction on iTunes at the time he went into his boss and quit. His boss asked him “what are you going to do?” and Adam replied “I’m going to make music” which conjured up a reaction. It was only as Adam gained some notoriety that Ann took notice. That was more her style at the time.
Ann’s married now with a couple kids. She married some guy that worked in the athletics department at the University of Minnesota, but now they live somewhere else. -
Lonely Lullaby is a song dedicated to Ann Marie,Adam Young's ex girlfriend who had moved away and things turned out to be different from what Adam had expected. He and Ann Marie never got back together. Hence the breakup took a toll on him and the song is him reminiscing about the good times he had with her. And the sad times he experienced with her absence

I know for a fact that its about his girlfriend, Annmarie as he mentions in the song its a very confusing matter but it makes you want to believe shes dead but when she moved they lost touch then she came back to where Owl City was but she came back with someone else Owl City took this hard He was deeply in love and that sight crushed his heart But we want to believe its a super heart wrenching death that he sings about but its not. I can give you this link to show you the truth: http://owlcityfangirl.tumblr.com/post/8497853306/this-is-ann-marie-monson-shes-the-girl-that. All you have to do is copy it and paste or If it does it right you can just click it.

Okay! So this song is about Adam's ex girlfriend who left for college in California and they simply started to grow apart. Since Adam was touring when they first started their long distance relationship, he sang to her on the phone as her lullaby. And no SHE. DID. NOT. DIE!!!!
-
I think its about a child that died and he cant get over it. he talks about lonely LULLABIES and thing that has things to do with a childhood.
-
It was his ex girlfriend. she did not die. trust me i know her.

EVERYONE STOP
Annmarie IS NOT DEAD
She moved away to go to school and they lost touch. She even attended a concert this past year. -
The song mentions an "Annmarie" many times, a reference to Adam Young's ex-girlfriend, Annmarie Monson.
-
The person in the song Annmarie was a former girlfriend of Adam's but she broke up with him becuase she thought he had feelings for Taylor Swift and she was jealous so ended it and left. The high school sweet heart story is in the song Vanilla Twilight
Hope this helps -
I agree with the person that says that it seems to be about a father/daughter relationship. Singing to a girlfriend seems a little strange. This is a chilling song, and I believe that anyone who has lost someone can tell it is about death. With sleeping comes bliss - "It's a bitter world, and I'd rather dream" - and yet sleep is not peaceful, littered with horrible nightmares "I'll dissolve when the rain pours in/when the nightmare take me." The storm that he constantly refers to seems to symbolize his feelings of anger that this person has been taken from him, and the rain his tears of grief.

Adam had an ex-girlfriend that he loved VERY much, and her name was Ann Marie. She sadly passed away from a car accident, and this is his way of mourning her death. The meaning of this song leaves you speechless.
