I see this as an attempt by someone who has provided and helped someone they care for deeply to overcome difficulties and show them what life is to be with someone loving. It goes unappreciated and the protagonist gets disillusioned and ends the relationship. If more people took note of the good people they had, this kind of song would be meaningless

This song was written about a girl in central Arkansas and a young man who did everything he could for her and it went unappreciated. Then he began treating her poorly as she did him. Let's be honest, I'm never looking back for my sake.

I think this is about a dramatic, desperate girl who is trying to keep a relationship going just for the sake of a relationship. Even if there's no love left, she still trying to hold on. She makes a scene when he tries to break up with her, but he stays strong and tells her no. He is just tired of an empty meaningless relationship and wants out. He tries to do this gently, but she senses weakness, which causes him to get firmer with her, and eventually the relationship ends.
