#2 top rated interpretation:It's an AMAZING love song :-) Basically I believe he is saying that he can't leave the girl he loves behind, and he knows if he had the assurance, he would still not be the best of himself. (his better half would fade), then he goes on to say that he will always keep her warm, and he will be there every step of the way even if they go all the way down. He always states "you can have all the money and the pearls", he really doesn't want ANYTHING else but this girl he loves :)

The couple is sure that they want to spend their lives together (mariage being the first step for exemple), but their "new" life (kids, house, etc) is a harder step to take. The unknown can be scary. But not matter what, they are jumping in together (the storm= anything, space= unknown) no matter how hard it can get (falling from grace).
The song also describes a need for one another. When one is in doubt or lost, the other finds the way (staircase out of this maze). When one is cold (sad, frightened, stressed), the other will confort (keep warm). Sometimes things get hard, and a couple needs their space (leave you behind = make decisions on my own, think of one as an individual and not a couple) but they aknowledge that they complete each orher (better half). There are things in life that the couple "wants" (money, big house, etc) but one thing they "need" is each other. Together, they can work for the rest.

The song is about a rare, incredible, once in a lifetime love. The foundation of the relationship is completely, unguardedly believing in each other. In doing so will then have profound impact on life. The love and commitment described in the song is so great that there is nothing in the world that has more worth. And there is no where in this world that they wouldn't follow that love to!

I honestly should have married Mikey...even though I was by His side spiritually..he left here alone.
But He knew I would follow Him wherever..as long as we shared the adventure -
I agree with most people that it's a song about undying love and devotion to someone you love. For me, it's about my 20 year old son who committed suicide six months ago. In his depression, I would have followed him down just to make sure he knew how much I loved him and he'd never be alone. He was a momma's boy and I still struggle when I hear this song.

I can absolutely see it when it comes to the relationships in our lives. Especially those that are very dear be it family friends or lovers. I very recently lost one of my very dearest friends due to an intentional drug overdose. To my knowledge he had been clean for 6 years and we did not stop speaking because WE wanted to but because it what I believed to be best for him in trying to mend his marriage. At any rate, I'm still struggling with this and this song May be too late for me and my Mike but its every single thought and feeling I think and still feel for him. Test in peace my brother. I will always love you!

I never heard this until me and my boyfriend and I were 1300 miles apart. He sent me a text and said this song is to me. I believe it means that no matter what choices you make right or wrong or out of impulse, that there's that one person you don't want to face those choices without. I think you can interrupt it in many ways, however to me it means he loves me and doesn't want to lose me and is willing to make whatever sacrifices he has to be with me and vice versa. Its about true love and no matter what life faces you with you want the one person to be there with you because they make you complete. We haven't had the easiest relationship but we are together now and happy. Apart we felt like something was missing. We are each others better half and I love this song.

I believe this is a very spiritual song.I'm so in love with it. I cry everytime it comes on. Its about loving someone so much unconditionally no matter what you will stay by their side and follow them anywhere. Even when they pass they will still be there to keep you warm.. they climb the staircase to you. Meaning they will meet in heaven someday. What a beautiful song. Anyone can interpet whatever they want in any lyrics.

I think the song is about true love. The guy in the song will go through whatever he has to as long as his woman is there by his side. He would truly be lost without her. That is true love right there.
