Smashing Pumpkins: Cupid De Locke Meaning
Cupid De Locke Lyrics
To cast divine arrows into her soul
To grab her attention swift and quick
Or morrow the marrow of her bones be thick
With turpentine kisses and mistaken blows
See the devil may do as the devil...
-
Cupid hath pulled back his sweetheart's bow
To cast divine arrows into her soul
To grab her attention swift and quick
Or morrow the marrow of her bones be thick
With turpentine kisses and mistaken blows
See the devil may do as the devil may care
He loves none sweeter as sweeter the dare
Her mouth the mischief he doth seek
Her heart the captive of which he speaks
So note all ye lovers in love with the sound
Your world be shattered with nary a note
Of one cupids arrow under your coat
And in the land of star crossed lovers
And barren hearted wanderers
Forever lost in forsaken missives and satan's pull
We seek the unseekable and we speak the unspeakable
Our hopes dead gathering dust to dust
In faith, in compassion, and in love
I believe this song is about those dreamers out there that believe in the fairy tale romance, and have false expectations for the perfection of love. Cupid represents the people who know the reality of love, and pull the innocent dreamers into the relationships that show us what love is really like.
"To grab her attention swift and quick
Or morrow the marrow of her bones be thick
With turpentine kisses and mistaken blows"
This part relates to how the people experienced in the reality of love pull in the pure before they are made impure.
"See the devil may do as the devil may care
He loves none sweeter as sweeter the dare
Her mouth the mischief he doth seek
Her heart the captive of which he speaks"
This is my favorite verse. The impure may pursue the chaste, and will do so especially if it is a more prized quarry. He seeks her mouth, and speaks of captivating her heart. This means that while she sees him as her Romeo, he looks to her out of lust.
"So note all ye lovers in love with the sound
Your world be shattered with nary a note
Of one cupids arrow under your coat"
All of those who do believe in the true beauty of love, be wary of those who use cupids arrow.
"And in the land of star crossed lovers
And barren hearted wanderers
Forever lost in forsaken missives and satan's pull
We seek the unseekable and we speak the unspeakable
Our hopes dead gathering dust to dust
In faith, in compassion, and in love"
This verse tells those of us who do understand this amazing view of love that we should not be misled by they who fire cupid's arrows, but to save our hopes, even if they may gather dust, and always be ready to meet your real true love.
