Sum 41: Holy Images of Lies Meaning
Holy Images of Lies Lyrics
Is this beginning or ending? Am I stuck in a dream?
I don't wanna know what I think, I suppose
Out of the light into this timely demise
And there's a cross on the hill, the holy image of lies
I've...

#1 top rated interpretation:Okay this is going to be a long analysis
but bear with me, I really like this song and want to do a good interpretation. I won't go over the whole song, just some key lyrics I feel I want to explain.
When I listen to it, I think this song is about someone losing or questioning their religious beliefs, hence the title "Holy Image Of Lies".
"Out of the light into this timely demise" to me means that the person is losing their faith ("out of the light") just in time with something else bad happening in their life ("into this timely demise"). Perhaps a loved one had died or maybe the person is just losing their faith when they are a teenager (and is having a hard time growing up).
"And there's a cross on the hill" - It refers to the christian cross, so I assume the person is losing/questioning their christian faith. "The holy image of lies" means that the person realizes that his/her religion may not be all truthful. "I've opened my mind, but this dream is still real" could mean that the person has decided that he/she isn't entirely a believer anymore, but still at the same time wonders and worries that there is a god.
"I don't feel a thing at all, no conscience, not no more" can mean that he/she doesn't feel the presence of a god (although probably had once before). "Paranoid, am I to run?" further reinforces the idea that the person constantly thinks about whether there is a god or not, and is in a sort of 'agnostic'position.
"forever's just a lie, but big enough to make you wanna try" means that he/she knows that eternal life (living in an afterlife) is just a lie, but a great enough one that makes you want to try and achieve it on the off chance that eternal life is real.
"In just one life, how can we, live enough to rest in peace?" means that he/she realizes that life is short, and wonders how can one die comfortably with how they lived their one life, and how long they lived. It leaves a question in the back of the mind, 'what if this isn't our only life people live? Surely there's more, this life is just so short'.
In the last bit "As I depart", it talks about him/herself on the day they die/pass away (or depart). "It's not so hard" means that death isn't so scary when you come to terms with it.
I'm not sure what to make of the last line "You have your scars but I never thought that you would give me none/mine" because it just cuts off the song. It may by the person reflecting on him/herself and someone they loved throughout the life they lived.
That took a while to write, please rate this interpretation up if you think it is accurate enough.
