Story Of A Lonely Guy Lyrics

Push it out, fake a smile
avert disaster, just in time
I need a drink, cause in a while
Worthless answers from friends of mine
It's dumb to ask, cool to ignore
Girls posess me, but they're never mine
I made my entrance, avoided...

Blink 182 is a great band. Tom Delonge and Mark Hoppus are great songwriters, and it is very unfortunate that that is so often misunderstood and overlooked. The song is about a guy with a severe social anxiety disorder and the effects that it has on his social and personal life. A serious song, on a serious subject. People develop severe social anxiety disorders to the point where they are too embarrassed to go out in social situations anymore. It can seriously impact a persons life and of course, prevent them from having any relations with the opposite sex. Something not to be taken lightly, although it is all too often overlooked.

This song is to me blink-182's treasure song. It has everything. This song is about someone who was too nice and let everyone squish him, as it says in "checked my engine, I fell behind" (nice guys finish last). Because of that he has social problems and is always being used ("girls possess me"). He now expresses his feelings in this song because now he found one of those girls who is really special and treats him differently. ("She makes me feel like its raining outside...")

I agree with the general themes expressed in most of the posts here. As someone with serious anxiety I can relate... beach lifeguard, college athlete at really top west coast school, frat guy, policeman, but not at all outgoing and basically had to fake and bluff my way through all of it....I just like to chill and be friends with everyone, but usually get taken advantage of and hurt. The song nails a lot of my thoughts and feelings. Now I just hope Mark kicks the shit out of cancer ♋

This is the theme song of my life,
It's about a guy who like this girl but she doesn't know it or he's stuck in the friend zone forever. When she's near, he gets so nervous that he just can't tell her "I get to scared to move" when he goes to school and out with friends he bottles up his emotions, "fakes a smile", goes. He tried to get advice from his friends but they either don't care or are players without any advice so they give him crap advise so je doenst even bother asking anymore "worthless answers from friend of mine, dumb to ask cool to ignore" he's also sad because all his friends are players with all the girls, they get them all just lookin at them and he is struggling to get any girl, let alone his crush, to even consider going out with him so he fell behind all his friends. He has had the oppertunity to tell his crush how he feels, "remember when I was in the grocery store, nows my time" but he can never get the guts to ask her so every time she's near, it's like a storm that leaves him all torn up inside. And my favorite line, "I would wish upon a star, but that star, it doesn't shine" he wants to wish for the guts to tell her but knows hiS wish won't come true. "So read my book with the boring ending, a short story of a lonely guy" he thinks that it's too late for him to get his crush so he thinks he's destined to be forever alone, that he's going to be lonely and that his story will be short cause no one cares to read very far in his boring book

This song is my favourite Blink song of all time. I can relate to it so much so it’s like my life’s theme tune. My perspective of the song in terms of my life has elements from all 3 of your comments (davidm416, fernyhuyke and laxmonkey44)

    Verse 1

"Push it out, fake a smile
    avert disaster, just in time"

This is as if putting up a falsie front to every one else so not be seen different, not letting people know about his problem especially the girl he likes.

"I need a drink, cause in a while
Worthless answers from friends of mine
It's dumb to ask, cool to ignore"

It’s as if he’s at a party and is sort of misery drinking in the corner out of the way to pass the time and soften his anxiousness of being out his comfort zone.
He then he ask his friends for advice on how to ask the girl he likes out they give pointless drunken crap only to confuse him more so much so that he has got to the point where he has gave up on asking.
Also he feels is dumb to ask someone out because he feels he already knows the answer is no, so he goes by the conversional more child like approach to ignore and play it cool as such.

"Girls posess me, but they're never mine"

Because he is so timid in nature around girls or because he’s a "nice guy" girls take advantage (not always deliberately) of this and get him to things to the whim and he never gets anywhere with them.

"I made my entrance, avoided hazards
Checked my engine, I fell behind"

This refers back to the idea of a party. That he came in quietly to avoid a social incident. He makes it but feels that all his friends are move on in their relationships with girls so much so that he feels left out only to fuel his anxiousness more.

    "I fell behind"

    This emphasizes his feelings

    Chores

"She makes me feel like it's raining outside
And when the storm's gone i'm all torn up inside"

The fact that the girl he likes only sees him as a friend it makes him feel like crap. It could be that he has a somewhat friend relationship with this girl and he wants it to be more and she doesn’t know that, so when she approaches him with a problem ("When the storm's gone") it tries him apart to see here like that but he can’t do anything about it or that he hates it that she doesn’t see him that way.
OR that he is so nervous around her that it makes him feel like crap and("When the storm's gone") that is when the day ("storm") is finished he starts blaming himself for not doing anything about his girl.

"I'm always nervous on, days like this like the prom"

That every day he’s always nervous like how you would feel going to pick up a date on the way to prom and how he always tries to look his best (like how you do at prom)to try to get her to notice/ or see him the same way he sees her.

"I get too scared to move, cause i'm a fuckin' boy"

Sort of speaks for its self. He is so nerves when around her he freezes. And then later regrets and gets angry with himself that he is a pussy and should be better than that, since he is not a stupid we kid any more.

    Verse 2

"Remember when I was in the grocery store, now's my time
Lost the words, lost my nerve, lost the girl, left the line"

This is him going over a event when he had his opportunity to ask this girl out but he bottled it and looked a tool.

"I would wish upon a star, but that star, it doesn't shine"

He wishes he could be with this girl to have a happy ever after with her (like in a faire tall) or have the guts to ask her out, but it never happens/ comes true ("but that star it, doesn’t shine")
To me this line shows his desperation and how much he likes this girl. That he will go to stupid child like approach to fix his problem when he knows that he is the only one who can.

"So read my book with a boring ending
A short story of a lonely guy"

This is like he is getting bored with his life and of getting no ware with his self-esteem. That he feels there not a lot to his life and that he is getting to the point where he is beginning to think he is destined to be alone.

    "Who fell behind"

This refers back to his concern that every one else is moving on and that he is becoming more isolated because of it.

    The chores is then repeated

"She makes me feel like it's raining outside
And when the storm's gone i'm all torn up inside
I'm always nervous on, days like this like the prom
I get too scared to move, cause i'm still just a stupid worthless boy"

Just like how I previously commented on the chores. How he’s always in pain when around this girl, that no matter what he does to impress her it never works and that he gets really nervous about rejection by her.

"cause i'm still just a stupid worthless boy"

He is refering to him self in the past, that he is still that little insicure , nervise child he has always been so he begins get angry or depresed at himslef agin.

That is my take on this brilliant song.
Being able to relate to almost all the words, I really feeling that I am the Guy in the song. I really liked a girl for 3 years but I was good friends with her but she didn’t see me that way. She just seen me as that "nice Guy" as did a lot of the girls in my school year. I was too much of pussy to ask her out and then when I had my shot at asking this girl out I bottled it. I got hung up on her so much so that I was oblivious to any girls who did like me. I fell behind in terms of my other friend’s relationships and sort of developed self-esteem issues doe to that. This song has basically been a theme tune to my high school life.

davidm416, that was an amaaing interpertation of the song. if u really listen to the words you can see that, thats what the song is really about, how this boy, has trouble with fitting in with not just boy, but girls. how he likes this girl and how his one chance to make a move in the grocery store, but he doesnt cause he is nervous and afraid. how he wants to be with her but he just cant do it. how he was never good with girls and how at school dances and is too afraid to look dumb and make a fool of himself infront of the girl and everyone around him. he wishes apon a star so that he can being this girl, but the star isnt shining. meaning that it its the star that can help him. its him sho has to help himself but he has low self esteem that he cant do it.

hmmm... no offense or anything, but i dont think it's that serious. I just think it's about... there are a lot of cool people, but they're just shy. I've experienced this, everything goes through your head a million times before you say it which makes you crazy nervous when you say it. A lot of times that makes things come out wrong. The part about the grocery store really explains what it's like to be that nervous.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway
