Breaking Benjamin: Close to Heaven Meaning
Close to Heaven Lyrics
Follow the damned, I have lost the way again
Stay, trust in life, carried beneath, dead arise
Sorrow avenged, I will face the weak within
So I'll stay unforgiven
And I'll keep love...
-
It's a love song. The lyrics lay out a situation where the pair for whatever reason can't be together but it doesn't matter if they can't work out because his significant other will always be in his heart.
And I'll keep love together
And I'll be yours forever -
Pain come alive, I try to breathe, shade my eyes
Follow the damned, I have lost the way again (Life of a sinner) I will face the weak within (face the sinner within)
I'll stay unforgiven (He is speaking in behalf of Satan)
And I'll be yours forever (He Benjamin will belong to Jesus Forever) -
I think there's an unspoken conflict in this song; something the main person is fighting and they seem to fall off track from time to time and give into the darkness inside them or dark thoughts about loving someone you shouldn't. That's what I get from the verses below;
[Pain come alive, I try to breathe, shade my eyes
Follow the damned, I have lost the way again
Stay, trust in life, carried beneath, dead arise
Sorrow avenged, I will face the weak within]
The next verses make me think that they can't be with this person, their lover, but they'll try to never leave them, by staying as close to them as possible.
[So I'll stay unforgiven
And I'll keep love together
And I'll be yours forever
I'll sleep close to Heaven]
When the main character is saying he'll stay unforgiven, it makes me think that he fell in love with someone he shouldn't and can't have. She might already be married or dating someone else. -
I think this is a song about someone refusing too let the one they love go. He'd sleep close to heaven to be near her even in the afterlife, to keep love together. He wants to be hers forever. I don't think they're in a relationship. I think she left him. "Release me my love" is like her telling him to let her go, but it's also like her admitting she does love him. The relationship didn't work out for whatever reason, but in his own way, he's refusing to end it. "I'm coming home" gives me chills up my spine when he sings it. It's like he'll be there coming home to her no matter what.
