Bring Me the Horizon: Chelsea Smile Meaning
Chelsea Smile Lyrics
It's on the tip of my tongue, it's on the back of my lungs.
And I'm gonna keep it.
I know something you don't know.
It sits in silence, eats away at me.
It feeds like cancer. This guilt could fill a fucking sea.
Pulling...

#1 top rated interpretation:There no such thing about homosexuality or about rape. Oli wrote this song to explain that nothing is as it seems. People that seem to be happy, have so many secrets and things that keep inside. It does also relates to his band, beacuse people see Bring Me The Horizon happy and they think that all they are about is parties and having fun all the time, which is not true. They are human-beings like everybody, and with that being said it is completely normal that they have feelings, and secrets and things that they keep inside. Not as the douchebag down of my post said, that they have the good life and blah blah blah. Truth being said Bring Me The Horizon have made songs about serious problems in a less than 10 years foundation. I think they differ from the other Metalcore bands beacuse all they are about is broken fucking relationships

#2 top rated interpretation:Joining the Illuminati.. Bam there ya go bitches

the secret kept was of someone wanting to un-live themself but keeping it is due to the fact that bringing it up would be met with firm hand of god. which person doesn’t believe enough in to provide confidence in resolution

I think he's got a secret
-
Perhaps this is about depression? I know many people say this and it's a really overused thing to say but "I may look happy but honestly dear, the only way I'll really smile is if you cut me ear to ear" and "I've got a secret, it's on the tip of my tongue, it's at the back of my lungs" possibly shows that he's keeping his mental health to himself and that when he finally did tell someone about it they told him that it can't be true because he looks happy and he's basically said that he may look happy but it's just all for show so that no one questions if he's okay or not and they'll just leave him be.
-
The song is most likely about his ketamine addiction, "I've got a secret, it's on the tip of my tongue, on the back of my lungs" Or it could just be about all secrets people keep, things people prefer not letting others know, like self harming as an example. This is definitely left for other interpretations, this is just mine.

The secret he's referring to in the beginning of the song would be his suicide attempt.
-
This song was about the time Oli tried to commit suicide just before they started the Suicide Season album. He wanted to talk about it but he didn't know how so he put it in a song.
-
No if you read AP Magazine it tells you that it is about how he did something really bad, what he did is unknown he wrote a song about it. Also if you have not noticed BMTH is a British band.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

Personally I think the song is about refusing to share your emotions when you have something inside you that you need to tell people but you feel like you cant tell anyone. You may act like your fine but really your miserable. It's about how holding your emotions in is not good for you and makes you more miserable. I've always held my emotions in and I've felt like I had no one to talk to. People thought I was fine because I acted like I was fine even though I wasnt. I finally told my friend everthing. I told him stuff that I thought I would never tell anyone. After I told him I felt so much better. I may be wrong but after I told my friend everything I realized what this song is about. But this is just my opinion to know exactly what this song is about you would probably have to talk to Oli Sykes.
-
I think this song is about rainbows, happiness, unicorns, having fun and cupcakes. The line it feeds like cancer this guilt could fill a fucking sea implies that Oliver Sykes and the band enjoy their lives very much and always feel good. Another song called It Never Ends also reinforces how happy the band is. Bmth is very optimistic.

I think he's battling with his faith and religeon. I think he knows that there is a god but he doesn't know if he should believe because he has given up on god. I also heard that chelsea smile is some sort of gang in prison but I don't know how reliable that information is. I think oli is an awesome songwriter and if I could write half of the stuff he writes I'd die happy. To make music out of that for all of us to listen to is the best gift he could ever give us. Everyone struggles with their faith at some point in their life and it's hard to get answers because with every question you ask ten more arise. It's a constant battle, but we are too afraid to say something about it. We keep it locked inside ourselves, and like he says, they're like anchors.
-
First of all, the Chelsea smile is a type of torture that originated somewhere in the UK and it involves placing a credit card in someones mouth and kicking them to make them scream cutting their mouth making it look like a smile. This is used to express the pain Ollie feels about his secret, what his secret is exactly is unknown. Some claim it to be suppressed homosexuality and others believe it to be rape. That is the great part of the song, figuring out the mystery.
