Dashboard Confessional: Don't Wait Meaning
Don't Wait Lyrics
I see it shining when my eyes close
I hear your warnings but we both know
I'm gonna look at it again
Don't wait, Don't wait
The road is now a sudden sea
And suddenly, you're deep enough
To lay your armor down
To lay your...

#1 top rated interpretation:I agree with the person above, but I also think that the line "You get one look, I'll show you something that the knife took a bit too early for my own good. Now let's not speak of it again" means that everyone, including himself, has been hurt in the past. It's not a reason to stay closed up. The beginning, "The sky glows, I see it shining when my eyes close. I hear your warnings, but we both know I'm gonna look at it again," is an example of her being afraid. "Don't wait, the road is now a sudden sea" says that the path they're following isn't a narrow road, it's an entire ocean. "And suddenly, you're deep enough to lay your armor down." After all, you can't (literally or figuratively) swim while wearing armor. So to continue on in life, she needs to let down her guard.

#2 top rated interpretation:In this song, Chris is in love with a girl who has been hurt too many times and is scared to open up her heart. He is basicalling telling her to let her guard down (lay your armor down), and open up her heart and not to wait because it might be too late. He is saying that the road is now becuase he is ready to love her better.

i think it's about him opening his heart up to a girl who's afraid to do likewise:
first verse- though he hasn't taken the leap of faith to open himself to the girl, he can still see all that they could be. she warns him not to risk it, probably cause she knows she will have trouble giving back.
chorus- he's asking her not to wait to late her gurad down and bare her soul to him. their sturdy relationship has suddenly bloomed (road is now a sudden sea) and they're both lost.
second verse- she gets a glimpse into his heart that he hid because of some tragedt that happened to him before. yet she was still not ready to do the same, meaning he made the first move too early, and don't want to do it again.
last verse- the relationship and sparks they had will fade if she does not open her heart to him. -
I think the song is about life and love. The line "the sky glows I see it shining with my eyes close" talks about what a dying person is feeling/experiencing. "I hear your warnings but we both know I'm gonna look at it again", shows that you can't stop death most especially when its coming.
"you get one look, ill show you something that the knife took" its like he is trying to make us understand that we only got one shot at life that we shouldn't be wasting it by "dont wait... To lay your armor down" not letting go of the things that prevents you from loving like maybe "pride" or something.
Bottom line, we only have one life we shouldn't be waiting for it to just end, we gotta do things that matter not only for ourselves but for the people and things around us. -
I agree with above except for "And suddenly, you're deep enough to lay your armor down." I take that to mean, okay, now you feel comfortable enough to let your guard down around me. So just go ahead and let your armor down so we can know each other on a deeper level.
