Kelly Clarkson: Because of You Meaning

Album cover for Because of You album cover

Song Released: 2005

Because of You Lyrics

I will not make the same mistakes that you did
I will not let myself
Cause my heart so much misery
I will not break the way you did, when
You fell so hard
I've learned the hard way
To never let it get that far

Because of you
I never...

I think this song is about how a girl grew up hearing her mother and father fight and when she grew up she fought with her boyfriend. Hence "And know I cry in the middle of the night for the same d**mn thing."

It's about her parents' divorce and how she had to grow up fast and about her mum leaning on her all the time cause she took the divorce hard. The lyrics basically tell the story but it's also a bit confusing at the same time.

I think this song is about the breakup of her mom and dad and how her mom seeks help from her but she can't help her because she is also suffering. This song describes her pain because of her mom.

Kelly has said that the song is about her mother and father's divorce, and how it's shaped her romantic expectations and reactions. I believe it is mainly about her Dad leaving their family when she was young.

What amazes me is that anyone would even THINK to find meaning in a song by such a no talent hack. (It's hard for me to imagine any of her fans actually having a brain anyway.) Winning a glorified karaoke contest is the only reason anyone knows who she is at all. American Idol is such an incredible waste of time -- I can't believe anyone actually thinks any amazing talent will be discovered that way.

When Kelly was growing up her parents got divorced, her father did not die when she was younger. When she says "Iwatch you die I heard you cry" it doesn't mean he really died but the life was sucked out of him but he was still living. Now she thinks about what happened with her parents and she doenst want it to happen to her.

To me it sounds like it's about a guy that cheated on her and its saying how he screwed up but she'd never do the same to him (the sidewalk is a metaphore). She wouldn't put herself in the same situation and have herself go through the pain he put her through.

I think this comes from the standpoint of a person living with a parent or sibling who has Borderline Personality Disorder. If anyone has lived with someone like that, they will understand the pain! For information about BPD, see: www.bpdsouthjersey.org, I have many links there for more information.

I've read all of these, and they're some good interpretations. I think that Because of You was written about a girl who was hurt by someone elses pain. Maybe that girl got into a relationship with a depressed/emotionally imbalanced guy. Making her as in as much pain, or more pain, than her partner. I can personally relate to that, so maybe that's why I came to this conclusion. The girls partner abused her, without even knowing it. Sharing/witnessing pain could also be seen as secondary trauma.
    Hope this helps

I think that it could go either way. It could be that her husband or boyfriend dying and that she tried to help him but she knows that he is going to die. Also that she's staying on the safe side so that she won't get hurt even more and she's "dying" of a broken heart. Or it could be that her mom and dad got divorced or her dad died and then her mom became miserable. And now her mom has literally died of a broken heart and that has tought her to stay on the safe side so that she doesn't get hurt like her mom

Kelly Clarkson is my favorite singer. This sounds exactly like my life. My mom got divorced and has not gone on a single date or had a friend in over 15 years. Now I find that I can't make friends easily or have any relationships with guys. I'm afraid to open up becasue when she did bad things happened. I love her but, its all her fault. I have no social life "because of you" mom. Everytime I hear this song I cry.

It also reminds me of my friend who's mom died and was the same way. She died of cancer in her heart but my frind swears she died from a broken heart. The man she once loved went to jail for a crime he didn't do.

I believe this song is about a suicide. Not sure if it is the father or mother, but it sounds like it is about a parent who was selfish and left the child. The parent only wanted to escape his or her own pain.

It's about Kelly's mom and dad, about how her mom was going through a hard time, but I'm a kid, I can't support you when I can't support myself.

It seems to be about a child seeing the break down of her family, and her mother not being a mother. The whole thing seems to be the fact that she is her mother, someone who will not let others in.
