This is about the lead singer struggling to deal with the fact that his ex-girlfriend is dating someone else. He acknowledges that he made mistakes in the relationship (you say sometimes it's like I hardly know you/ and maybe there's some things I never showed you) and admits that no matter how badly he wanted the relationship, he just couldn't make it work (sometimes you're certain but just can't get it working). At the same time, though, he doesn't want to think about his ex finding someone who treats her better, even if he understands, on some level, why she would want that (I'll shake his hand and smile and say I understand/ well I do/ but that don't mean I don't think about you)

Throughout the song, the singer knows that he is being petty and unfair to his ex (I know it seems beneath me/ but sometimes it's not so easy/ to wish you well and let you go), but he can't help the fact that he is in pain, and he wishes that she would just stay single, at least for a little while longer, so he doesn't have to feel the agony of seeing her with someone else (Why can't you just be lonely / I know you need someone too/ but this just feels so soon). The singer tries to convince himself that he has changed, and that he could be a good partner to his ex again, but he's not sure if that's really true (I know sometimes I only twist you / and maybe I'm too proud to say I missed you/ but what if here and now I tell you that I'm all figured out / but maybe I just like how that sounds).
