Ever After Lyrics

Once upon a time I used to romanticize
Used to be somebody never mind
Don't miss it that much now I think it's sinking in
Days that I wonder where I've been
In picture perfect porcelain
But I won't lose a pound

You say I would make...

You got that right, but I'm pretty sure the singer is not talking to anyone but himself and in the end HE becomes his ever after. He doesn't ask for anyone's help, because no matter how much help you can get, you will never succeed if you don't really want it yourself, if you don't take the decision to quit it. And eventually he summons the power he needs to finally handle it.

This is my absolute favourite song! Here is my opinion on what it means.

    Once upon a time
    I used to romanticize"
(Josh used to romanticize about things like being thin.)

"Used to be somebody, never mind
Don't miss it that much now"
(He uses to be somebody before he started using drugs, and now he doesn't miss the person he was before.)

    "I think it's sinking in"
(The fact drugs are taking over his life is becoming apparent to him)

"Days that I wonder where I've been
    In picture perfect porcelain
    But I won't lose a pound"
(Some days he wonders why he is doing this to himself. He sees the drugs as perfect, but claims to be in control of his life.)

" You say I would make a better liar
And never face the music when it's dire
And I breathe disaster, ever after
Don't pull away from me now"
(He lies to himself, and he doesn't want to face the fact he needs to stop. He only breathes disaster because of what he is doing to himself, and yet he feels the drugs could be his happily ever after and doesn't want them to go.)

    "Don't you move
Can't you stay where you are, just for now?
I could be your perfect disaster
You could be my ever after
You could be my ever after, after all
I could be your perfect disaster
You could be my ever after"
(He wants things to stay the same for now. Josh wants to continue being what he thinks is happy)

"Apologies, I'm not myself but I can guarantee
That when I get back, you won't believe
    That you knew me well"
(Things start to change. He knows he isn't himself, so he decides it is finally time to go to rehab to get better. When he gets back he will be a new person.)

"Don't want to think about it
I'm fuckin' tired of getting sick about it
Now stand back up and be a man about it
And fight for something, fight for something, fight for something, oh"
(He doesn't want to continue with this, and is tired of literally getting sick because of his choices.)

"I would make a better liar
And never face the music when it's dire
And I breathe disaster, ever after
Don't pull away from me now"
(It is time to stop lying to himself he is facing the music)

    "Don't you move
Can't you stay where you are, just for now
I could be your perfect disaster
    You could my ever after
Now you could be my ever after, after all
I could be your perfect disaster
You could be my ever after"
(He has to be strong and continue to get better. He has to stay where he is and not give in)

"Nobody told ya this is gonna fold ya
We go marching in like toy soldiers
To have and hold ya over sold ya
    They’re marching like toy soldiers"
(Josh is letting go, no longer controlled by drugs.)

"Somehow don't you dare fail, fail me now, ever after
Somehow don't you dare fail, fail me now, ever after
    Somehow"
(Rehab can't fail him, he needs to,go through with it.)

"(Face the music when it's dire)"
(He has faced the music and gotten help)

    "Once upon a time
This place was beautiful and mine"
(Looking back he says drugs used to be his happy place.)

" But now it's just a bottom line
    Barely comes to mind
    But ever after was mine"
(He realizes that it was his lowest point and tries not to think that it made him happy, and that he thought he had an ever after)

"I'll be your disaster, ever after
    So fire away
    Goodbye"
(He has a new chance to get an ever after and is saying goodbye to his old one.)

"Once upon a time I used to romanticize..
." (Josh used to romanticize about being thin.)

" Used to be somebody never mind..."
(Josh used to be somebody before his got eating disorders and was addicted to heroine.)

" Don't miss it that much now I think it's sinking in..."
(He doesn't miss his old self. The fact drugs are taking over his life is finally sinking in.)

"Days that I wonder where I've been
    In picture perfect porcelain
    But I won't lose a pound..."
(He has some days he can't remember where he's been because he has been nearly consumed by his struggles. Josh won't loose to it.)

"You say I would make a better liar
I never face the music when it's dire
    I breathe disaster, ever after
Don't pull away from me now..."
(People say he needs to stop, he won't face the fact this is bad for him. He breaths disaster because of his choices, and he doesn't want to stop yet.)

"Don't you move, can't you stay where you are just for now
I could be your perfect disaster
You could be my ever after
You could be my ever after, after all
I could be your perfect disaster
You could be my ever after..."
(Again, he doesn't want to stop it, and wants to continue on like this. All this self destruction is his "perfect disaster" and as he continues to do this, he is their "ever after" as they live in him, and destroy him.)

"Apologies I'm not myself, but I can guarantee..."
(He knows it is bad, and he is sorry about it. He will guarantee one thing though...)

"That when I get back you won't believe
    That you knew me well..."
(He will quit this. He will get help, and when he is done, we won't recognize him. You won't believe the change.)

"Don't want to think about it
I'm fucking tired of getting sick about it
Now stand back up and be a man about it
    And fight for something..."
(Josh doesn't want to think about what this has done to him. He is tired of literally getting sick from what he is doing to himself. He is going to stand up and take this like a man, and fight to get better.)

    " I would make a better liar
I never face the music when it's dire
    I breathe disaster, ever after
Don't pull away from me now..."
(He has lied to himself too long, and now it is hard to face it.)

"Don't you move, can't you stay where you are just for now
I could be your perfect disaster
You could be my ever after
You could be my ever after, after all
I could be your perfect disaster
You could be my ever after..."
(He is having second thoughts about getting clean. Josh knows it is right, but he doesn't know if he can do it.)

"Nobody told ya this is gonna fold ya
We go marching in like toy soldiers
To have and hold ya over sold ya
    They're marching like toy soldiers..."
(Nobody told him just how difficult getting clean would be. He is used to being controlled by his struggles. Josh is used to having and/or holding onto drugs, not getting rid of (selling) them.)

" Somehow don't, you dare fail
    Fail me now, ever after
Face the music when it's dire..."
(Rehab can't fail him, he won't let it. Josh needs a new ever after without drugs. He is facing the music.)

    "Once upon a time
This place was beautiful and mine..."
(Once upon a time drugs and self destruction were his beautiful place)

" But now it's just a bottom line..."
(He realized it was his lowest point and that it wasn't a beautiful place after all)

    "Barely comes to mind
    Ever After was mine
I'll be your disaster, ever after..."
(Now he is ok. Ever after was his, but it was the wrong kind. He is still getting over it so he will be a bit of a wreck, but he will be a "disaster" and you can be his "ever after" and help him through it.)

    "So fire away
    Goodbye"
(Even after his struggles got to him, he was able to overcome it and say goodbye to them.)
