I think that this song is an interpretation of a little girl, asking her parents where babies come from, and the lyrics that are the answers, starting with "They come from..", are the parents' responses, each on the other — the mom's distant towards the dad, and the dad's distant towards the mom, by that, I think that the parents aren't on good terms with the other, but can't divorce, for their child's childhood, yet aren't afraid to tell the girl. I think that the girl was once Melanie Martinez herself, stating how she feels on these types of parents, through this song, as a parenting message.
