Little Talks Lyrics
(Hey!)
(Hey!)
I don't like walking around this old and empty house
So hold my hand I'll walk with you my dear
The stairs creak as you sleep it's keeping me awake
It's the house telling you to close your eyes
Somedays I can't even...
-
When they sang this song on "The Voice", it almost seemed like the version of him being a ghost and she seeing him in her sleep or around her. They way they moved around the stage it never seemed like they looked directly at each other and he moved as though he was a "gentlemen" ghost.
-
I thought it was about the Titanic.
-
I think the song is about the girl being either mad or mentally ill and the guy trying desperately to comfort her.
"And though the truth may vary
this ship will carry our bodies safe to shore."
(No matter what happens, we will end up in heaven together) -
All of these interpretations seem right, but for me it seems like more of a couple going through something painful that they have to keep a secret. Which then causes the woman to fall into depression and become a ghost of her former self. The man is trying to help her through it and says he misses her.
-
I think both versions are right. The song might actually interpret the girls point of view when the girl sings and then interpret the boys point of view when he sings. The girl thinks she is a widow because of her loss of memory and doesn't remember who her husband was so she thought that he had died, so then she also wants to die to go back with him but of course her husband is alive, and as he sing he says that she should not die. Then the woman thinks that she would be fine in her dreams because she might receive her memories back in her dreams. The man is then trying to get her back fully recovered every chance he gets. "Your mind is playing tricks on you dear" is an example of the man telling his wife that she isn't actually seeing her husband as a ghost, since he isn't dead. She is always thinking that her husband isn't there and that he is dead because of her disease. At the end, when they both die, their problems are resolved and they get back together. Overall, both versions are correct and are in fact 2 stories (or perspectives) in one song.

Who says that the husband/boyfriend needs to be dead? And who said that the wife/girlfriend needs to have a mental illness? The most basic interpretation is that the man "left"- you can interpret that any way you want, whether he died or just moved or left, whatever. She can't survive without him. Anyone's who has experienced real love knows you don't need a mental illness or death to feel alone and empty.

The woman in this song does not know how to cope with her feelings & grief regarding someone she once loved. Great love was the foundation for the relationship between these two people. So great that it consumed them entirely right before it became toxic, leaving them both broken & alone. As a result, she is completely torn. Part of her still loves & longs for this man, while the other part of her hates & loathes him. She wants to ignore those painful memories buried deep but is unable to get them out of her head. These feelings of doubt & ambivalence are directing her in every direction, including insanity.

I think it's dumb how
people keep saying the girl has Alzheimer's.. Noooo. The guy died and she is going crazy without him. -
These lyrics have a very special meaning to me. My past is a bit unusual. I fell in love (many years ago) to a friend of the man I was dating. We were very close and I confided many things to him. To make a long story short, when I tried to break up with my boyfriend, he threatened to kill the other guy and himself. I was too young to handle this. I stayed with him. I spent years with the threat of "You can kill me but you can't leave me" and other forms of abuse, some physical. I kept my thoughts of this other man very close to me. I felt like he was with me. I never got over it, I just lived this fantasy basically, that SOMEDAY we would find each other again. That was 30 years ago. My abuser committed suicide 19 years ago. I have moved on but I will never quite get over that first love...

From "Interview Magazine", the band actually makes this statement - THE REAL "LITTLE TALKS": Okay. "Little Talks" is... How we usually make our lyrics is, Raggi and I, sometimes we come up with stories or situations. That one is about a relationship. Sometimes we haven't wanted to give too much away. We like people to read their own things in the lyrics. I guess I could share it. It's about a couple and the husband passed away and it's from the conversation between the two of them. We don't know if she's going crazy or if someone's actually there. We've kind of been inspired by people that lived in my house. This old couple that lived there for 30 years. The woman passed away, so it was kind of different.

I believe this song is about two polar opposite characters in a relationship. It may be a husband-wife/father-daughter/sister-brother/student-teacher relationship,in which the masculine protagonist is the more stable, mature and stronger character. As we all know, women tend to (feel) more. They feel deeper and stronger compared to men. They also tend to blame themselves for things they do not do. For instance, when a couple gets divorced, the woman will tend to blame herself for being unable to keep her marriage afloat. In this song, the feminine character is at her worst, and the masculine character is trying to help her get out of it.(It) might refer to depression/suicidal thoughts/melancholy.As we can see,the feminine character is a very negativr and melancholic character. The song brings out their combined strength to help her save herself from herself. It is,after all, very similar to the song,Evanescence(Bring me back to life).A beautiful song through and through. :D

The band has said what this song is about and while they do WANT people to make their own interpretations of their songs they did say what inspired this one. It is indeed about a woman who lost her husband and she misses him badly. She said it was based on a couple that was married for 30 years that lived in a house near them.
-
I believe one of the two died, at the beginning it would seem it's the boy the one who died but then, during the song, you can see the pain grow both sides, how they miss each other and in the end it's hard to say who died, to the point that it looks like it was the girl the one who died and the boy simply feels dead without her and imagine her walking alone as a ghost and feels her misery. But then again it would not even matter who's dead and who's alive, since life holds no meaning if they are apart...
I got the above feelings from the repetition of "the truth may vary" "your mind is playing tricks on you" "somedays I can't even trust myself".
P.S. Sorry for my bad english, I'm Italian. -
I think the above interpretations are really good, but I also have an idea of my own: I think it may be about a girl going through depression, or maybe a disorder where she feels like she is losing her true self. And the guy, whoever he may be in relation to her (boyfriend, friend, family member, etc.) is trying to comfort her and let her know he is always by her side and there when she needs him.
When the song talks about their bodies being carried safely to shore, I think they mean that when the couple have both passed, she will be back to her true self and will be able to live in total peace.
Whatever the true meaning of this song, I think this song is beautiful and I love it! -
