Little Talks Lyrics
(Hey!)
(Hey!)
I don't like walking around this old and empty house
So hold my hand I'll walk with you my dear
The stairs creak as you sleep it's keeping me awake
It's the house telling you to close your eyes
Somedays I can't even...
-
yes, and wait wait wait for me just shows her mind is now willing to accept what is or what happened. Definately a woman in mourning sharing her feeelings.
-
continued...the ghost of you meaning my memory of you is all that is left. Dont know if she wrong or right is she feels she can't go on without him. Scream sound all the same....because they all cry out of longing to be with not without, she is mourning. Like I said all natural feelings and how we deal with love & Loss.
-
drowning in a sea of love! He has already drowned and she is left without him. Not mental, just longing to be with him. Telling him what it is like to be without him and his ghost is reassuring her all is what it is suppose to be and soon we will be together, as we all die at some point. All very natural feelings, nothing mental about it. Simply Beautiful. If we don't over interpretate.
-
My interpretation of the song, though it may be VERY wrong, is that I think the girl may have cheated on her boyfriend/husband and they are attempting to get over the fact that she cheated.
"The stairs creep as you sleep and is keeping me awake" tells me that she might be returning from another lover.
"Some days I cant even trust myself" maybe she cant stop cheating?
"Soon it will be over and burried in our past" - Eventually they will get over it.
"Youre gone gone gone away, i watch you dissapear" - he eventually leaves because they cant fix what she has done.
I havent even seen the music video, so i probably should before I post, but this is what i thought of the song. I didnt think it had to be literal when they say hes a ghost, but maybe someone in her past that she misses. -
i know the girl who sang the song described the song how she thought it was to her but i saw in my own perspective... i see this song as a lost person trying to find their way back to God and the journey is tough but true...where it says "i dont like walkin 'round this old and empty house" its saying she feels empty and she doesnt know whats missing..."so hold my hand ill walk with you my dear" God will guide her thru her trials and mistakes..."the stairs creak as i sleep its keeping me awake" she keeps making these mistakes and cant sleep cause she thinks she has done so bad in life..."the house is telling you to close your eyes" God is telling her she is forgiven... "some days i cant even trust my self" she cant trust herself to make her own decisions because shes messed up so much...""its killing me to see you this way" Gods not getting thru to her cause she wont let him..."cause though the truth may vary this ship will carry our bodies safe to shore" shes out on the "sea of dispair" but she just know deep down that God(the ship) will carry her safely to shore..."dontlisten to a word i say"people are trying to say things to her to lead her down the wrong path but she knows not to listen to them..."hey!" every time it says hey! i think of it as God shouting hey to her to get her attention and every time hes getting to her more and more... "the screams all sound the same" this ones kinda tough one but immediately when i heard it it was like, you cry out to God and it all sounds the same to you like meaningless babble but God sees it all differently and in a whole new light... i love this song... this is my first time to blog about my song interpretations... hope u like it!!!

This song just touched something inside of me. A deep deep part. I believe the woman is fighting very hard to hold onto her sanity. I believe the man's part- the things he is saying- are just platitudes that fall flat for her. They are inno way enough to hold her back from the awful spiral downward that she is in. These singers are from Iceland, Viking land. A ship carrying your body out was often on fire- your funeral pyre. I believe the woman feels her only true refuge is in death and that no amount of little talks will help. There is the part she says too about things in the past being in her head-perhaps abuse that have prompted this mental illness.

This song is about a couple. The husband recently died, which drives his widow over the edge with grief (literally).
"I don't like walking around this old and empty house
[So hold my hand, I'll walk with you, my dear]
The stairs creak as you sleep, it's keeping me awake
[It's the house telling you to close your eyes]"
Here, we see the wife grieving-over her loneliness. The husband is trying to comfort her; maybe he's softening her up so he can convince her to join him? This is supported by the last line, "It's the house telling you to close your eyes". This may not mean sleeping; it could mean dying. Maybe he's saying that even the house wants her to join him in death.
"Some days I can't even trust myself
[It's killing me to see you this way]"
Once again, the wife is acknowledging her spiral into insanity. However, the husband is trying to be sympathetic. But his line could also be another ploy to try and get her to commit suicide; maybe he's hinting that if she just goes and does it, she'll be free from her insanity.
"Though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore"
The wife is acknowledging that she's going crazy, but she seems to be saying that in the end, it will all work out in the end and that a "ship" (death) will carry their bodies safe to "shore" (heaven, I'm presuming).
Also, the husband's ghost seems to be convincing her to "join" him by committing suicide, but she's reluctant to do it:
"There's an old voice in my head that's holding me back
[Well tell her than I miss our little talks]"
The wife seems to be going insane with her grief but is finding it hard to want to join the husband in death.
"Soon it will be over and buried with our past
[We used to play outside when we were young
And full of life and full of love]"
I think that right here, the wife is saying that at some point, she will probably move on. The husband is seemingly agreeing, saying that when they were young (and before he died) they were full of life and love for everyone, but now, the wife feels dead inside.
"Some days I don't know if I am wrong or right
[Your mind is playing tricks on you, my dear]"
The wife's mental health is just getting worse. The husband is once again hinting that her joining him will free her from her mind; "your mind is playing tricks on you, my dear". If she dies, she'll be free.
"[Don't listen to a word I say]
Hey!
[The screams all sound the same]
Hey!"
Now, I think that the husband is telling her that yes, she is going insane ("The screams all sound the same"). But he also seems to be warning her; if she does "join" him, she may regret it ("don't listen to a word I say")
“You're gone, gone, gone away
I watched you disappear
All that's left is the ghost of you”
The husband is haunting her every thought.
“Now we're torn, torn, torn apart,
There's nothing we can do
Just let me go we'll meet again soon”
She’s promising her beloved that she will see him again. This verse ties back to the second part of the chorus – “Though the truth may vary, this ship will carry our bodies safe to shore”.
“[Now wait, wait, wait for me
Please hang around
I'll see you when I fall asleep]”
The husband is telling her not to let him go; he wants to be with her. The wife is refusing to commit suicide for him. However, he’s saying that he’ll see her when he falls asleep; this could mean that he thinks about her all the time. -
I was right and so was everyone else if you guessed husband died

An alternate thought. A long term married couple has drifted apart (he's gone gone away) and become strangers living in a house that is "empty". He has been lying, distant and she doesn't know what is true, and doesn't want to take this sh*t anymore (I misheard the lyrics)
She wants to leave, and a friend who loves her is giving her the support to be brave enough to. -
from an interview they gave on interviewmagazine.com:
THE REAL "LITTLE TALKS": Okay. "Little Talks" is... How we usually make our lyrics is, Raggi and I, sometimes we come up with stories or situations. That one is about a relationship. Sometimes we haven't wanted to give too much away. We like people to read their own things in the lyrics. I guess I could share it. It's about a couple and the husband passed away and it's from the conversation between the two of them. We don't know if she's going crazy or if someone's actually there. We've kind of been inspired by people that lived in my house. This old couple that lived there for 30 years. The woman passed away, so it was kind of different. http://www.interviewmagazine.com/music/discovery-of-monsters-and-men/ -
I agree with one of you here. I believe the girl is doubting the longevity of this romantic relationship. However, the guy is very calm doing everything he can to assure her that they'll be fine. He probably thinks that she may be overthinking the 'what if' scenarios. Further, I believer this is a couple that has (had) history together but at present moment they are trying to make it work (perhaps, a second chance for their Love). ... but she remains with doubts and little hope. I am rooting for the guy to be right; I love his gentle confidence in their relationship!

The song is open to interpretations. Most people say it's about an old couple, but it doesn't have to be old.
-
The husband has died and the wife is having a hard time with it as it is, but the husband won't leave her. He's still there, but as a ghost. She says she sometimes doesn't trust herself (that he is only a ghost)that she doesn't know anymore is she's wrong or if she's right. Finally she knows as much as it hurts she is going to have to tell him to go ahead and pass on so she can live the rest of her life, which is when she tells him that he's gone she saw him go, he's now just a ghost. She's not, so please, we were torn apart, there's nothing they can do, so let me go, I'll be with you soon. He's sad, he doesn't want to do that so he's telling her to wait for him, but obviously if she wants to move on she can't wait for a ghost.
-
Nanna revealed the true meaning: that it is about an old couple (solution 2). The man has passed away and she talks to his ghost, maybe just in her head. It was inspired by her neighbors - the wife died after 30 years of their marriage.
-
The more and more I listen to this song, I get more and more ideas of what the meaning could be. But the idea that speaks most to me is that the woman is suffering from depression or schizophrenia and the man hates to see her hurting and suffering. It seems as if the man is just trying to soothe her panicky mind 'your mind is playing tricks on you my dear. The house is telling you to close your eyes etc.) because he knows that no matter how much pain they both in they will be together forever in the end.
