In my opinion it stands for something greater than friendship or love. I think it means that you are gold and can shine, no matter the situation in life; that's why one of the music videos start off with a homeless guy. I think it also means that because of who you are, people keep you in their hearts, and all they need is you bc you're gold, you're amazing and beautiful, and just you. It means that you are so much more to someone else than what you think you are bc to someone out there you are gold. It means that to someone u r the light in the dark, and they keep u in their heart bc of who you are. This song is very inspirational, and I think it also has to do with moving on in life, because of the line that says " and you can tell them your story" it might have to do with letting things go and overcoming the challenges in life to become " gold" and inspire others to do the same.

I think it's telling us about us to keep shining like gold and that we are beautiful and you can do anything and don't let anything hold you back from doing it and that we are going to leave people we love sometimes or (might) and you have to keep living and be gold which is what you are. or this song could have a deeper meaning to it who knows lol but it's a really beautiful song to me most of owl city's songs are inspiring and just beautiful he's probably only singer I know with a unique voice and his songs inspire you and even save people's lives of who are going through depression or went through it.

Just an add on to the last comment, I also think it's talking about how you're precious and don't let anyone put you down again this was an add on by the same person.

I think It's about best friends and sticking up for them( as you did see in the video when that man got struck). The best friends in this video was the cat and the man(homeless).
even though this probably has deeper meaning that is just what I think.hoped this helped and remember to stick with your friend like the friends in the video.(touched my heart) -
This could be from the perspective of a parent, encouraging their child to get out there and pursue their dreams.
