   Bret gave us the meaning of this song at a concert last September. He said it was meant for your love, your family, or your friends. The battles you face together are nothing compared to your feelings for one other. You'll always be there for them as they will for you.

   Bret is a Christian.
   The man in the song is too but his faith is weak. He doesnt have 100% assurance of God--that doubt builds a staircase to his unbelieving girlfriend.
   He is basically telling her he will choose her over God if thats what it takes and even though he could be in hell(in the deep)he would still be with her. He wants her to walk up the staircase but will not leave her behind.
