5 Seconds of Summer: Broken Home Meaning
Broken Home Lyrics
She would hope, she would pray, she was waiting it out
Holding onto a dream
While she watches these walls fall down
Sharp words like knives, they were cutting her down
Shattered...

#1 top rated interpretation:"They would yell, they would scream, they were fighting it out
She would hope, she would pray, she was waiting it out
Holding onto a dream
While she watches these walls fall down"
It's about a girl, probably about 13-18 years old, at least old enough to understand what's happening around her. All her parents are doing is fighting. Fighting and fighting and fighting non stop. All she's doing is hiding, taking in the comfort of what she has left of her house before the walls completely crumble on her. The parents: they represent the walls. Her concrete structure. All they're doing is fighting and it's doing nothing but tearing down the walls and breaking her further and further.
"Sharp words like knives, they were cutting her down
Shattered glass like the past, it's a memory now
Holding onto a dream
While she watches these walls fall down"
Relentless shouting about this and that and her and the family and how unhappy her parents are. Things being thrown at one another, she's trying to block it out but she can't. The past is nothing but memories of the family they used to be, being able to hang out and get along and do things together without having to worry if her parents are going to fight today or not. The walls(otherwise known as her parents) continuously crumble on top of her, the weight of the segueing becoming too much to her and all it did was bring her down and sit on her shoulders like a weight.
"Hey mum, hey dad
When did this end?
Where did you lose your happiness?
I'm here alone inside of this broken home
Who's right, who's wrong
Who really cares?
The fault, the blame, the pain's still there
I'm here alone inside of this broken home, this broken home"
Sick and tired of sitting back and trying to get herself through it, she speaks up. When the hell did this become some kind of game consisting of who's right and who isn't? Why aren't you happy anymore? She's living alone. The Demond's inside of her are eating her alive and all she can do is feel how alone she is. You can blame all you want but no matter what, it's going to come back around and bite you in the ass. No matter who takes the blame for what and who is responsible for what, IT STILL FUCKING HURTS. This child is going through living hell and she's by herself in it. THIS IS NOT A HOME AND THIS IS NOT A FAMILY. THIS IS A HOUSE THAT IS CRUMBLING TO THE GROUND. AND THIS GIRL IS BY HERSELF, HER PARENTS DONT CARE ABOUT HER ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS THEMSELVES AND BEING AGGRIVATED WITH ONE ANOTHER. THEYRE TOO CAUGHT UP IN THEMSELVES TO NOTICE THE SHUT THEYRE PUTTING HER THROUGH.
"Wrote it down on the walls, she was screaming it out
Made it clear, she's still here, are you listening now?
Just a ghost in the halls
Feeling empty, they're vacant now"
Now she's screaming back with them. All she wants is for her parents to realize 'HEY, IM HERE TOO AND YOU GUYS ARE TEARING MY LIFE APART. ALL IM WORRIED ABOUT IS WETHER OR NOT IM EVEN GONNA GET A PRACEFUL NIGHT OF SLEEP WITHOUT HEARING THIGS BEING THROWN AND MY PARENTS SCREAMING' but they're not listening to her. She's just wandering aimlessly, nothing but a wind to her parents. She could dissapear off the face of the earth and they won't even notice.
"All the battles, all the wars, all the times that you've fought
She's the scar, she's the bruises, she's the pain that you brought
There was life, there was love
Like a light and it's fading out"
Now they're realizing, slowly, that she is falling apart as they're ripping each other apart. What was once a family of happiness in nothing but the tattered remains of what used to be. It's gone. Fading into the dust of the crumbling walls.
"You've gotta let it go, you're losing all your hope
Nothing left to hold, locked out in the cold
You painted memories then washed out all the scenes
I'm stuck in between a nightmare and lost dreams"
The hope is lost. Her family is nothing but the happy memories that are slowly fading, and she's done fighting for it. They block her out anyways, she left and they have no idea. They don't care, the parental battle goes on and on and on.
She doesn't want to remember the family the used to be. She doesn't care about what they used to be, she's sick of it, she's done trying to fix what would never be the same anyways. She's living a nightmare, and she's never waking up from it. -
This talks mainly about a person who is suffering while their mum and dad argue and fight.

I think that this is about Ashtons life before the band.
"They would yell, they would scream, they were fighting it out
She would hope, she would pray, she was waiting it out
Holding on to a dream
While she watches these walls fall down"
His parents would scream, yell, and fight with each other while Ashton hoped and prayed that the fighting would be over. So he waited, but when nothing happened his life fell apart.
"Sharp words like knives, they were cutting her down
Shattered glass like the past, it's a memory now
Holding on to a dream
While she watches these walls fall down"
Even if the words weren't meant for him they still hurt like it would when a knife is cut through a vein. The memories he had of his life before are distant and barely there because they have been replaced with the new bad ones. He sat there watching as his family was torn apart.
"Hey mom, hey dad
When did this end?
Where did you lose your happiness?
I'm here alone inside of this broken home
Who's right, who's wrong
Who really cares?
The fault, the blame, the pain's still there
I'm here alone inside of this broken home, this broken home"
He's asking his parents when their love ended and when they lost their happiness being with each other. He doesn't care who's right or wrong. He's still hurt. He felt like it was his fault that they were doing this and he blames himself for it. He's alone. He's been alone since this all started.
"Wrote it down on the walls, she was screaming it out
Made it clear, she's still here, are you listening now?
Just a ghost in the halls
Feeling empty, they're vacant now"
He wants to scream back at them. To finally get them to actually notice him. But they didn't. They were too busy fighting. He could fall off of the face of the earth and they wouldn't even notice.
"All the battles, all the wars, all the times that you've fought
She's the scar, she's the bruises, she's the pain that you brought
There was life, there was love
Like a light and it's fading out
His parents are slowly realizing that he's fading away from them. There used to be a light in his eyes but now there's nothing. They're dull because of how much hatred he's seen between his parents. There isn't a family of happiness anymore. Now it's just broken pieces of the family they once had.
"You've gotta let it go, you're losing all your hope
Nothing left to hold, locked out in the cold
You painted memories then washed out all the scenes
I'm stuck in between a nightmare and lost dreams"
He's lost all hope. There's nothing left to hold onto now. He's done fighting for the happy the family they once were. He tried to remember the good times they once had but they faded away a long time ago, and he honestly couldn't care less. He's stuck in a never ending nightmare that he can't escape. -
Her family was falling apart right in front of her eyes and she would hope and pray for it to get better but nothing worked... this is Ashton's life story as a kid, he had this happen to him, his family just fell apart and the fighting and screaming wouldn't stop no matter how much he hoped and prayed. They they just changed the he to she and then they told the story. It's trying to tell people that broken homes happen to the best of us to matter how hard you try to stop the family from falling apart, they are trying to tell us it's going to be okay.

"They would yell, they would scream, they were fighting it out
She would hope, she would pray, she was waiting it out
Holding on to a dream
While she watches these walls fall down"
It's pretty obvious what the lyrics state in this section of the verse. Her parents were fighting while she constantly hoped and prayed for some peace to come from the war. She was holding on to the dream, the hope that this nightmare would stop tearing her apart. She watched her home, and her family break apart. Her walls tumbling down beside her.
"Sharp words like knives, they were cutting her down
Shattered glass like the past, it's a memory now
Holding on to a dream
While she watches these walls fall down"
The words, even if they weren't meant for her, they still struck a deep cord inside of her. Just like a knife cutting through a vein, the words cut through her, it started beating at her until she broke and she couldn't help but watch the walls fall.
"Hey mom, hey dad
When did this end?
Where did you lose your happiness?
I'm here alone inside of this broken home
Who's right, who's wrong
Who really cares?
The fault, the blame, the pain's still there
I'm here alone inside of this broken home, this broken home"
Basically the chorus is the girl wanted to know why the parents had to start it. She just wants to know when their love broke and when or how they died along with it. She doesn't care anymore who's right or who's wrong, she just wants the war and nightmares to cease. It's like a never ending migraine beating her up. Tearing her from the inside out. No matter how hard they'll try to keep peace all the hate and broken trust and pain will never leave. The tension would linger for eternity. The girl just wants to be set free from the demons and the pain of being all alone in the home that doesn't even feel like one anymore.
"Wrote it down on the walls, she was screaming it out
Made it clear, she's still here, are you listening now?
Just a ghost in the halls
Feeling empty, they're vacant now"
No, not literally did she write on the walls. It was like she was so that someone would finally see the big picture that they aren't a home or a family anymore. She was screaming for someone to help and nobody would see the pain. She's waiting until someone sees that they realize she's been alone this whole time. She was living like a ghost, unseen by the naked eye and that nobody could see what living hell she was going through. The halls were never once really full. Her life was never once real. There wasn't never true love and life in her life.
"All the battles, all the wars, all the times that you've fought
She's a scar, she's the bruises, she's the pain that you brought
There was life, there was love
Like a light and it's fading out"
Every time they'd fight, they would take it out on her. Maybe not physically but she probably felt that she was the cause. Maybe the parents would be set free if she was no longer there. They'd still be stuck together if she was still there. At one point, there was the love and life, but it was like a timer that ran out and everything was thrown away. All the memories, care, love, life, all gone. It was a light, that had faded out, like an incent. It stayed for a while, but it was gone just like that. The darkness had filled and everything went blank.
Bridge:
"You've gotta let it go, you're losing all your hope
Nothing left to hold, locked out in the cold
You painted memories then washed out all the scenes
I'm stuck in between a nightmare and lost dreams"
This part was probably the hardest to understand. We need to let go of the hope someday because it's running out and soon, we we won't have the faith to keep going or the faith that the light would come back.
Everything was thrown away, and she was thrown into the cold, locked out from living a full life of love and light ever again. The memories were just a faint image, painted there forever, but it would soon wash away, because as said in another song "Nothing lasts forever, nothing stays the same.."-Wherever You Are.
There was the brink of existence of hope, but she was still stuck in the darkness that even though she had lost dreams, her hope sti clinging onto them, she was still stuck in the never ending nightmare. -
