5 Seconds of Summer: Ghost Of You Meaning
Ghost Of You Lyrics
Still can't sleep on your side
There's your coffee cup
The lipstick stain fades with time
If I can dream long enough
You'd tell me I'd be just fine
I'll be just fine
So I drown it out like I always do
Dancing...

#1 top rated interpretation:I think that the song is a continuation to the song 'Invisible'. In 'Invisible', they mention that they had possibly ran away. Because the song says 'I was already missing before the night i left', and in ghost of you, it says 'Found that old zepplin shirt, you wore when you ran away...' It also mentions that they were living a life that wasnt theirs; which makes sense because 'Invisible' is a suicide letter. And at the end of 'Invisible', Calum sings "Another day, The walls are here to keep me safe, It's too late." Which means that they could have killed themself, and the person being effected misses them a lot. So Ghost Of You is how they feel. How they miss this person. And also, in the song 'She looks so perfect' they say "Your lipstick stain is a work of art" and in Ghost Of You, they say "Your lipstick stain fades with time". And in 'Amnesia', he says "If today I woke up with you right beside me" and "I'd hold you closer than I did before".
So in conclusion, Two people were dating and they ran away together. The girl had a mug that always had her lipstick stain on it, and he thought that it was a work of art. But then they broke up and he wishes that he could wake up with amnesia to forget about it. But she forgot the mug and her Zepplin shirt at his house and he keeps them. But after awhile, she finds herself in a toxic relationship (In Amnesia he sings "When he says those words to hurt you, do you read the ones I wrote you?")So she thinks about killing herself. So she does, and Ghost Of You is how the guy is feeling now. And he doesn't want to accept the fact that she is really gone, until the end of the song where he does. Because his feet wont dance like they did with her. -

#2 top rated interpretation:Yes it said she ran away but it is very obvious she killed herself. Bc it said “when you ran away, and no one could feel your hurt” so its obvious she had depressing thoughts or just thoughts in general bc one of the lines was “so i drown it out like i always do” and he feels guilty and idk but thats what i got from it

#3 top rated interpretation:I think of it as someone he loved dying in a way that completely broke him. I don't think it's about suicide, but maybe a freak accident that lead to her sudden death, shocking him and leaving him feeling empty and still wanting her, henceforth the reference "ghost of you".
I don't think it could be referring to suicide because in the lyrics, it says "you wore when you ran away", but this could mean different things. It could mean that she ran away from home when they were younger and they could have been friends and he knew all about it. Maybe he was the one that she ran away to, therefore him knowing that she wore the Zepplin shirt. Or it could mean that she ran away with him and that day she was wearing the shirt. If she had run away with him or even to him, I don't think she would have left him through suicide because I think she would have loved him too much to leave him or even put him through so much pain. From the chorus of the song, they had danced together and the fact that he mentions it so much means they must have done it frequently and it was his favorite part of being in the relationship with her.
It's all pretty recent to him too because he doesn't want to sleep on her side because he doesn't want to let go of her yet and accept the fact that she's gone. He can still see the lipstick stain on her mug that she must have drank from the morning before she died. He keeps dreaming about her, but he also doesn't want to because he can't dream of her long enough because he doesn't want to get trapped in the pain of knowing that she is no longer there. He tries to be okay with it but he can't, and he's still dancing throughout the house like he used to do with her and he can feel her presence when he is. By the end of the song however, the last lines of the chorus changes from "Dancing through our house with the ghost of you" to "That my feet don't dance like they did with you". This is the point where he finally fully realizes that she's not coming back and he is just dancing alone in an empty house, but still wishing that she was with him. -
It's about someone whose significant other has died and they imagine to dance around the house with the ghost of their loved one as a part of their grieving process to deal with the death.

I think the song is about a passed on or broken up with lover and the guy is finding it hard to move on with his life hence the cup that still has her lipstick on it that fades with time. The guy drinks to avoid reality that she is gone and he knows that she is gone but alcohol probably allows him to hallucinate her and he dances with her ghost so he drowns himself in it.

i think that is about a girl who committed suicide
"Cleaning up today, found that old Zeppelin shirt You wore when you ran away, and no one could feel your hurt" she had a type of depression and no one understands how much she was in pain so she committed suicide when she wore that shirt and then she said goodbye and left the world and the boy blames him self becaus he could not help her and that's when he said "So I drown it out like I always do" beacus he blaming himself he still not over her and has not accepted that she is gone so he still dancing around in the house but in the end when he sings "That my feet don't dance like they did with you" he finally accepted that she gone
just need to say this is one amasing song and i love it <3 -
i think this song is about a girl who killed herself. she was in a relationship with the narrator and had depressing/suicidal thoughts. they used to dance together and she wore his led zepplin shirt. when they broke up she left a coffee cup with lipstick stains and his led zepplin shirt. they remind him of her. she becomes part of a toxic relationship that pushes her over the edge and she commits suicide. now he misses her more than ever. he wants to go back to dancing with her- to what they had before. but its too late. this is his goodbye where he is now dancing alone with the memory- the ghost of her.
-
I think its a the next part of the story of broken home and invisble. I think the girl commeited suicide and died. Now the boy is dancing with her ghost. But soons joins her.
-
He lost the girl that had a relationship with and now he still lives in their house alone and feels sad. The girl probably left him (“too young too dumb to know things like love..”)
-
I think the song is about a 2 people who are in a relationship. Well one of them passes away from taking there own life. And the song is the the other persons view on life with out the other person. They find everything hard and sees how much different life is with out the other person. Nothing will ever be the same with out them. Like they feel so lonely and that everything reminds them of the other person.
Also I was watching the cock tails chats to this song and the only one who really looked at the camera when talking about this song was luke. Like all the other just got really sad. Calum really didn’t explain the song. Just explained why the put it at the end of the album. -
I think its about a relationship that suffered a hardship. I think that she got sick and is now too sick to do anything. All she does is lay in bed and when she dies him and her dance because she couldn't before.

Everyone is saying the songs about the girl dying, but i really don't think that's what it is. I think she had broken up with him for whatever reason, and 'ghost of you' symbolises the memories of her and he is still upset about the breakup as it was recent. He still hasn't cleaned up her coffee cup with her lipstick stain.
So yeah even though the song is about the 'ghost' of her. T think it's more of a metaphor rather than he literal ghost

Cuando la letra dice "found that old Zeppeling shirt, you wore when you run away, and no one can feel your hurt", se refiere a que ella estaba triste, se sentía sola, deprimida o con depresión, quizá.
I think this song is about someone who lost a girl that he loved a lot. The death may not have been a suicide but she left too soon. He sings “here I am waking up, still can’t sleep by your side”, “your lipstick stain fades with time”, and “found your old zeppelin shirt”. These lyrics are describing that he is missing the girl who is no longer with him.
-
I think the first one.
-
I think it means that she died from a freak accident and he can't move on.
-
I think its about a guy who really loved a girl but she is died. he's left grieving because he doesn't know why she committed suicide. he say that 'if I dream long enough you'll tell me I'll be just fine' but he doesn't think so. he was happy and fine when they were together. even though he's trying to clean up her "zepplin shirt" that brings back memories when she ran away and came back to him. the coffee mug is still there with her lipstick stain and he can't sleep on her bed side. he still wants her to be there. he's delusional about her presence. her ghost will forever live in their house. I think he mean that he will never forget about her. no matter how many drinks he takes. she will forever dwell in his heart and their house.

I feel like the song is about a girl who committed suicide,
and the girl is someone Luke Hemmings (the singer) loved,
he said in the song he's "dancing through our house. with the ghost of you",
it means that this girl killed herself and it left Luke in a very dark place,
that's my opinion anyway
