AWOLNATION: Sail Meaning
Song Released: 2011
Sail Lyrics
This is how i show my love
Made it in my mind because
Blame it on my ADD baby
This is how an angel dies
Blame it on my own sick pride
Blame it on my ADD baby
SAIL!
SAIL!
SAIL!
SAIL!
SAIL!
Maybe i should cry for help...

First the video begins with a light shinning through a window symbolizing what many think are aliens. My interpretation is that the aliens in the song represent the A.D.D that he posses."Maybe I'm a different breed" shows he doesn't feel normal and that his A.D.D affects him so drastically that he feels like an alien or alienated from society. He blames his actions towards his girl friend on his A.D.D. Sail represents stay with me or leave. This is shown at the end of the song "Sail with me into the dark" "Sail"!
-
To me, this is actually a love song about a possibly mentally unbalanced person who really does love the "target" of the song. We'll say the guy loves the girl, the guy is somewhat mentally unstable or just very odd. He has an odd way of showing his love that can't be described by the normal conventions of love. If we want to go lyrics by lyrics - "This is how I show my love, I made it in my mind because"
-I can't show you the traditional way, I just don't know how.
"This is how an angel dies, blame it on my own sick pride"
-I don't mean to hurt you, but I'm to strong to admit a weakness, I can't help it.
"Maybe I should cry for help, maybe I should kill myself. Maybe I'm a different breed, maybe I'm not listening. Blame it on my ADD"
-I can't form the words to let you know how deeply I feel for you, I'm not normal, there is something society thinks is wrong with me, but it's okay, because it's not bad. I'm not bad, just different. I show my love in a way that you might not expect.
"Sail with me into the dark..."
-So just hang on. It'll seem rough, but I promise it'll get better. I do love you, even through it's hard to show it, and even through I can be an emotional wreck. All the pain is worth what I'm going to be able to give you in the end.
So, that's my interpretation, I think it's about a relationship with someone who is a bit mental, from the point of view of the mental person. Sometimes you have to get past the eddies in the current that will drag you down to get to paradise. -
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

Like everyone else I do agree how it can multiple interpretations. Besides him being hunted or going on a trip I also, believe he got in trouble and everyone saw and he keep trying to make it up. Like he may have started a problem and he tries to fix it but keeps getting lost or distracted (the ADD caused his distraction). But, now it is too late for him to fix it all up. So in that case he killed himself. That is one way about Attention Deficit Disorder version. My second interpretation is about the other version of ADD (Alcoholism and Drug Dependency). He could have used substances like acid, schrooms, lsd, etc. (trip drugs) and saw something that he wasn't supposed to. When I saw the illuminati pyramid that's when I had to write about the Trip version. He could have been on a trip and came to a conclusion the illuminati is real and is after us and since he knows he was abducted by the so he can never be seen again. His recorder will explain it all and that is why he dropped it. But, I will never know until I see the explanation of the song writer.
-
He is talking about the illuminati in my opinion. someone was bound to bring it up but in the music video he starres at his wall of pictures. on the wall of pictures the screen freeze's and closes in slightly on the all seeing eye (symbol of the illuminati) he is either talking about the illuminati in my opinion or he is scared of dying as the white light would suggest.

If you think about it honestly a.d.d. Does not only mean attention deficit disorder it also means alcohol and drug dependency. He is explaining what drugs do to him. He talks about drugs sometimes making him want to kill himself and sail away with me into the darkness is like saying take this drug and it will put you in a different world like it does me. He's is completely describing drugs effects.

I'm so happy people take time to try and analyse songs... IT MEANS JUST WHAT IT SAYS... to you
-
I know this doesn't fully follow the whole music video this is my feeling on the song. I think part of it is a person who is struggling with being bullied or hurt by many people, when he says "maybe I should cry for help, and maybe I should kill myself", it's seems like he is being hurt, and then when he says "blame it on my ADD baby", he's either telling his excuse for it or the bullies' excuse for it. When he says "Sail" he is trying to say that he wants to run away from it all, and be ok.

The song can be interpreted with multiple layers of complexity.
For me the following tends to make most sense:
ADD not only stands for Attention Deficit Disorder,, but also Alcoholism and Drug Dependency.
- To "Sail" is to take a "trip" .
The video references of alien abduction is a wonderful metaphor for being "taken over" by substance abuse.
"Maybe I should cry fro help, maybe I should kill myself .. blame it on my ADD"
_All the lyrics make more sense when ADD is interpreted with the second, lessor-used meaning of Substance Dependency.. -
This song isn't about add.it's about doing what you want when you want no matter what ppl think...and when your choices weigh on you as a mistake you blame it on something.it's about making bad decisions and although they felt good you regret them later.blame it on my add...be it alcohol/drugs whatever ales you.point is...he's not what society thinks is normal...he makes choices others wouldn't...he's felt regret...but in the end we are all either fake, or can sail away in our own desires.in the end its easier to make an explanation than to explain ones self...so yes..I got fucked up and partied out and woke up some where strange...and no I don't know how I got there...blame it on my add...and I feel like shit inside for it...maybe I should kill myself...oh wait, I'm still fucked up.
-
I think its a guy who's struggling with post traumatic stress disorder from when he was an astronaut and he's saw things he shouldn't have and it ruined his relationship with his girlfriend or wife and he's battling it with himself and he's paranoid and that's why he's freaking out thinking that he's going to be taken out of his house and he's going back and forth saying you know blame it on my ADD cause now he has no control over his "paranoia" for lack of better term.
-
the way i see it the video means one thing and the lyrics mean another
lyrics could be talking about a self destructive individual who wants to kill themselves and taking their significant other with them. no one understands why he is the way he is and you can choose to blame it on any of his flaws but he has accepted it and embraced it.
the video shows someone who is engulfed in their work and has big dreams. but the people he was investigating have discovered him and want to detain him. he knows that he will not be out in a long time if at all and wants to leave an important message behind (most likely about his inevitable abduction)he manages to momentarily escape but they indirectly ask him to come with them peacefully and he complies. -
Point blank he his an angel in disguise going down the wrong path.
The constant struggle of good vs evil. He wants to sail Like an angel but cannot because of the mistakes he has made. He feels like he is meant to be something greater but cannot overcome is own flaws. Nuff said. -
Heya i’m for the first time here. I came across this board and I find It truly useful & it helped me out much. I hope to give something back and help others like you aided me.
